foobar can't connect to the internet

I have checked firewall and all external factors. It shouldn't be any of those.
Basically it literally out of the blue, stopped being able to connect to the internet yesterday. I didn't change a single component or setting.
Tried upgrading foobar today to 1.2.6 - didn't help.

I noticed it when my tracks stopped scrobbling
Audioscrobbler: Connection error

Then, I found that Get Updates didn't work.
Could not check for updates: Connection error

Online troubleshooter doesn't work.
Online troubleshooter failure: Connection error

Other components that require internet connectivity don't work like the freedb and discogs plugin. However the online searcher in foo_uie_lyrics3 works which is weird. foo_upnp works locally but I don't know if it would work remotely since I don't use it like that.

The proxy is set to none. It's a portable install. Running as admin doesn't help (and shouldn't I would hope ). Running Win 7 x64.
Where do I start; do you guys need any more info?

foobar2000.exe is most likely blocked in your firewall.

I have checked my firewall settings and even disabled it temporarily, no luck. That can't be it anyway because it did work one minute and then didn't the next. That was on my laptop and on a different internet connection. I have the same issue now on my desktop on my home connection as well.

OK this is really weird. It's not config side or foobar side. Using a clean install has the same issue. To test I'm not configuring anything or installing any plugins - just trying to run the online troubleshooter. What could it be if it happens on both my laptop and desktop both on different internet connections and no change made to any firewall setting etc by me??

If both machines have the same firewall then likely the vendor released an "update" that broke it.  Try foobar on a machine that does not have the firewall installed.

It's Windows firewall. A fresh install works in another machine so I'll have to dig deeper... no idea where to start!

Turn off all security software temporarily is a good start.

I don't have any other than Windows firewall and foobar still doesn't connect when it's disabled. I'm going to try safe mode with networking next.

Edit: won't boot into safe mode with networking, just artifacts after loading classpnp.sys, sounds like I have bigger problems! Never seen this kind of OS degradation with otherwise such normal performance and stability...
Also forgot about MSE but turning that off didn't help either.
Edit 2: Quite suddenly, it works on my laptop now. But still not my desktop. I have literally not changed a single setting. All I did was boot into safe mode w/networking on my laptop and then boot normally and the it worked.

- Can your web browser access the internet when foobar2000 can't?

You don't have any antivirus software installed?

I recall something. One day I needed to create ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) settings on my PC. As I use Comdo Firewall I always turn off Windows Firewall. ICS worked fine on XP but failed permanently on Win7. After several months (!!) of digging I found the reason. Before I turned off Windows Firewall I had to set it to allow EVERYTHING in its settings (or maybe just not to monitor ANYTHING - I could set both things one by one  ). After I did this everything worked fine and the only filtering application was Comodo - its rules were working properly, ICS was working as it should. So maybe if you disable Windows Firewall you have to do the same - at first set it to allow everything or stop monitor anything, and disable it after saving these settings.

Sometimes it's not enough to just stop it, need to disable the service.

Run > services.msc > Windows Firewall (set Startup type to Disabled) > Stop the service.

By "turning off" I mean "disabling service" as you described Andreas. In my example disabling the service without prior entering the right settings resulted in problems with working of ICS.

Sorry for the late reply.

Everything else can connect to the internet, just foobar won't.
I find common sense is the best defense against viruses. Just don't click that dodgy link or go searching for that dodgy thing!
Allowing all connections through Windows Firewall, disabling it, disabling its service and restarting doesn't help.

I still can't fathom for the life of me why this 1) happened spontaneously and 2) happens with fresh foobar installs. O.o Definitely a problem with my computer though.

What if you copy bare minimum and run it portable?
Try also rename the exe.

Only common sense fails to protect you against for example usual drive-by downloads (malware distribution through compromised, serious web sites: to catch an infection it is sufficient to open them in your web browser; no clicking or any further user action is needed). But my question's intent was to make just sure that not an additional component of a possible 'security suite' is blocking foobar2000.

With regard to your failing internet connection (I am still supposing that it is a software problem): what about restoring Windows to a previous state (System Restore)?

Hello everyone. I registered because I was having this problem also (connection to freedb failed constantly and foobar wasn't able to check for updates).
So, I checked foobar's networking settings (File > Preferences > Networking), and in "Proxy server" I changed from "Use Internet Explorer settings" to "No proxy", and it solved the problem!

T D, have you got Spybot S&D installed on your computer? Is your Internet Explorer configured to use the Spybot proxy to connect to the internet?

I ask this because I have Spybot S&D, and it turns out that, when I installed Spybot, I selected the option "Use Spybot proxy" in the Spybot Settings, so my Internet Explorer was configured to use Spybot proxy.
The problem was that recently, I disabled one of Spybot's background services (SDScannerService - sdfssvc.exe), so that it didn't auto-start on Windows startup. But without that service running in the background, Sbybot proxy settings do not work.

Since I use Firefox to browse the web and I don't have any proxy settings configured on Firefox, I was still able to browse the internet without any problems. Only when I opened Internet Explorer I realized that it wasn't connecting to the web because of the Spybot proxy not being able to work.

I don't know if this is your problem but I decided to post this explanation because it might be useful for someone.

Cheers

Not only did I check that, but I tried "No proxy" in the foobar network settings.  No luck!
The only sure fire solution I can think of is reinstalling Windows which seems a bit extreme..
