Mp3tag V.2.33 released

I've just released Mp3tag V.2.33 which features full Unicode support for all supported file types

You can download it from
http://mp3tag.de/en/download.html

The huge changelog is here
http://www.mp3tag.de/download/mp3tagversion.en.html

Please note, that Windows 9x and Windows ME are not longer supported.

Best regards,
~ Florian

That's good. The only way I've been able to tag MP3 files with furrin characters (like Greek letters for those rebetiko songs) was to use the Properties sheet for them on WinXP (right-click, Properties). And then I don't know if it does it right. With a hex editor, I find the tags are encoded in UTF-16. I'm not sure ID3v2 encodes tags that way. Anyway, Winamp (even the latest version, 5.1) doesn't support foreign characters in MP3. Works with all other file formats, though. Beats me why.

Ahhhh, you put a comma after the word "note". Aber mein lieber Herr! It is important to be consistent, so that your sentence should be "please note, that Windows 9x and Windows ME not longer supported are".  No offence meant, of course.

AFAIK ID3v2.3 allows for "standard" ISO 8859-1 encoding and UTF-16.
ID3v2.4 additionally allows for UTF-8 as character encoding.

Nobody uses v2.4  , neither does MP3Tag, so it now encodes v2.3 Tags as UTF-16 by default ...

I can't comment on Winamp supporting UTF-16 or not (I use ISO 8859-1 only for compatibility reasons) but if it doesn't, it does not fully support the v2.3 standard ...
shame on thee, Winamp

Regards,
Klaas

PS: MP3Tag v2.33 certainly is the best release ever of this great utility ... thx so much

Thank you Ganymed very much!  You have fixed the only problem I had with your program at all as all my ID3v2 tags were UTF-16.  Now I can be happy as I find your app a bit easier for me to do my tagging with than foobar2000, which I love for just about everything else.

Thank you again for your excellent tagging program

Thanks much for the info.  So UTF-16 is standard, and if I need to tag an MP3 with Greek characters I can use the Properties sheet of WinXP (or MP3Tag...).

I can say that my Winamp 5.1 on my Windows XP Service Pack 2 doesn't allow me to enter Unicode characters in the ID3v2 pane. Or more accurately, it does allow me to enter them, but it saves them as question marks. And those are real question marks (character 3F), not replacement characters, as a look in the hex editor confirms.

Thank you all for the nice feedback! I'm glad that you like the new release

Unfortunately there were some minor bugs which are fixed in the current Development Build/Hotfix Release I've just released.

You can get the new version from here (changelog included)

I'm a foobar user and new to mp3tag: I see it does process all tag types. But I don't find a way to show ape tags. In the file preferences, it does only show the idv1 tags. Why?[a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=336551"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Just enable APEv2 tag reading at 'Options > Tags > Mpeg'.

To be sure, that the currently displayed tag is an APEv2 tag, you can create a new column for the file list ('View > Columns...') with
Code: [Select]
$if(%_tag%,%_tag_read% (%_tag%),n/a)
as value. This will show up as APEv2 (ID3v1 ID3v2 APEv2) and lists the displayed tag type in front of the parentheses and all available tag types inside the parentheses.

Best regards,
~ Florian

Edit: Oops, seems that you've figured it out already

Thx Ganymed.

I've got a freedb problem: Can't connect. Or it does connect and bad response. No personal firewall involved btw.

I get "The server failed to return a valid query response code". I get this on any query. I also get this in the options when trying to get the freedb server list.

Adress and path is: freedb.freedb.org/~cddb/cddb.cgi
Protocol http, of course I set my mail adress.

BTW. If I try a freedb search "based on the current audio cd" (I've got no audio cd in my drive), mp3tag crashes.

EDIT! It works now. Must have been a problem with the freedb server.

Question: With the foobar freedb plugin, I can see revision numbers if there are multiple entries for the same album. Could you offer these too? A wish: Better preview integration (like in foobars plugin), more informations in the freedb result overview...

Anyway, thanks for a useful tool.

The current Development Build should fix that problem. Thanks for reporting!

I'll have a look at it.

Btw, there are also the Mp3tag forums, which are probably the best place for feature requests and bug reports (you can even post in german ).

I'd like to thank you very much for the unicode support. Now I can finally use a great opensource jukebox - MusikCube. I tested WinAMP and it works correctly with my files. But you have to select a unicode font for the display.

[a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=345357"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

very cool. However, I noticed 3 things:

1.) Is it possible to retrieve just the tag of song other than the first one? Even though I selected song 3 mp3Tag would still tag the song as if it was the first one.

2.) Is it possible just to save the album art in the file and not the entire tag? I'm aware that I could save the album art and add it by hand.

3.) Any chance to have mp3Tag to handle more than 1 Album at the same time? After finishing the first album, it could automatically display the result for the next one and so on.

On more thing: is it possible to stop mp3Tag to ask for what Album name it should search? Instead, I want it to always use the name presented in the album tag.

thanks
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.

You made me to download the v.2.34 and upgrade my 2.33. Now, when I try to open the "Customize columns" dialog the program produces a runtime error ...
This bug should be fixed with Mp3tag 2.34a. Thanks for reporting.

However, unfortunately it can't display wma bitrates correctly. For example, the about 75 kbps Satie.wma file shows up as 176 kbps.
I'm using the "Bitrate" attribute to get the bitrate and I have no idea what WMP10 uses to get the information.

Best regards,
~ Florian[a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=345405"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Thanks. I'll try the "a" build.

The WMA "Bitrate" field shows something like the maximum bitrate used, but not exactly even that. Perhaps it is used for showing the needed bandwidth when streaming files.

It seems that you should use either the CurrentBitrate or the OptimalBitrate field (these two values seem to be always identical inside wma audio files).

Here is an example tag dump:

Code: [Select]
Audio Codec: Windows Media Audio 9.1
Format: 128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo 2-pass VBR
Protected: No
Seekable: Yes
Trusted: No

WMA Tag dump:
   Signature_Name:
   WMFSDKVersion: 10.00.00.3802
   WMFSDKNeeded: 0.0.0.0000
   Duration: 1901730000.0000000000000000
   Bitrate: 141627.0000000000000000
   Seekable: Yes
   Stridable: No
   Broadcast: No
   Is_Protected: No
   Is_Trusted: No
   HasAudio: Yes
   HasImage: No
   HasScript: No
   HasVideo: No
   CurrentBitrate: 129515.0000000000000000
   OptimalBitrate: 129515.0000000000000000
   HasAttachedImages: No
   Can_Skip_Backward: No
   Can_Skip_Forward: No
   FileSize: 3101421.0000000000000000
   HasArbitraryDataStream: No
   HasFileTransferStream: No
   WM/ContainerFormat: 1.0000000000000000
   IsVBR: Yes
   ASFLeakyBucketPairs: <unknown data>

When I calculated the bitrate from the actual file size I got 130.47 kbps, but the WMA header is included in the value (no other tags) so I guess it is a close match.

The "CurrentBitrate" field contains 176720 for the Satie sample you've provided - just the same value as the "Bitrate" fields contains. So I'm not sure, if the "CurrentBitrate" attribute should be used for bitrate display.

It would be great if we can move this discussion to the Mp3tag Forums.

Yes, this is possible. I've just added a cover-only version of the Amazon.com web source to the Web Sources Archive.

I've put your other suggestions on my internal wish list.

The "CUTTED" samples were artificial. I used Windows Media File Editor for cutting already encoded WMA files. I think the editor just copies the previous values.

You may want to encode a few test files with various WMA standard and Pro VBR settings (normal 1-pass, not 2-pass), check the provided bitrate values and compare with manually calculated bitrates. dbPowerAMP converter has all WMA format options easily available.

I guess it is useful for other developers to reply here, because e.g. foobar can't show correct WMA bitrates. Actually, all programs I've recently tried have a problem with this.
