bit-rate ABX

I did an ABX of lossless vs 320 MP3 vs 192 MP3 vs 128 MP3.
The track I used was Mel Torme's Sleigh Ride on Telarc's Jazzy Christmas CD (something like that).

I could hear a difference correctly 24/25 times on the 128, 8/10 times on 192, 14/21 times on 320 (between the bitrate and lossless).

Now, when I re did this with Wicked's Dancing Through Life, or even worse Green Day's American Idiot, I could hear a difference but I couldn't match it up.

Is this typical?

My system was: Foobar ABX -> Kernel Streaming -> M-Audio Audiophile 192 -> DIY Pimeta headphone amplifier (class A bias, stacked buffers) -> Sennheiser HD-650

Hmm, which encoder? which settings? Did you decide about the number of trials beforehand? Were the results enabled or hidden during testing?

BTW: 14/21 means that you couldn't distinguish. 8/10 means that you "probably" could hear a difference, but there's some uncertainity. It is normal that with some music a difference can be easier spotted than with other.
