What is the difference between m4a files and aac files?

I need to know what is the difference between m4a files and aac files. Are they the same thing? If not which is better? And if aac is the answer to that question how do I get it on itunes? sorry didn't know if this was the right place to post this topic.

Short answer: they're the same thing.  m4a (or mp4) is a container format within which the audio compressed with the aac codec is typically stored.  If you're using iTunes then you want to stick with m4a files.
