STFT and MDCT

What is practical difference between short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) which is lapped. How its work with time-frequency analyse?

MDCT is critically sampled, i.e. suitable for compression. STFT is more flexible with a choice of weighting windows, allows better sidelobe attenuation.
