Emu 0404 usb.

I have this 'card' for a while. 
I have tried/set up as many options as I can find to play music files thru this device but no sound from speakers.
The head phones work finely, but there is no sound throughput to my amp. I am using the spdif[coax].
Someone who has this device, please advise,

SPDIF only works using ASIO. You need an ASIO capable music player and map the channels.

An example of this kind of software is Foobar2000 + ASIO plugin.

I don’t have any Emu cards, so I don’t know if they have some special disability, but I do know that S/PDIF does not require ASIO with most hardware (never heard of it being required with any before today).

Using that output can not produce any audio unless the S/PDIF signal goes to an external DAC, then from there to the amplifier & speakers. Since the soundcard’s DAC is of such high quality, there is unlikely to be any advantage to using its digital out this way. Can you get sound using the analogue outs? If so, the problem is most likely not the card but your external DAC, although it is possible that the card’s digital out is simply broken,

As said already and IIRC, it's also told on the E-MU 0404 USB User's Guide that ASIO is needed for S/PDIF ... you can't map those ports otherwise (Windows Mixer does not list S/PDIF port ... and as the audio stream through other than ASIO or WDM/KS drivers goes through this mixer ...).

You can try this with Native Instruments Beatport SYNC (free player that supports ASIO) quite easy.

ok. I have mapped the outputs spdif[left & rt] thru ASIO in foobar, but still I can't acheive sound out put to my amp.
The 'output' in foobar is to the EMU device and all the buttons on the usb device are correctly set.

Am not sure on the above post about the DAC, do I really need one? surely I should be able to get sound out to spkers thru the spdif as thru any other device using spdif, shouldn't be any different.

The 'support' by phone from Creative[aka emu] is non-existant only email, or perhaps as might be construed with 'real-time' delay in response actually getting to anyone...snailmail...lol

Have you installed the latest firmware/drivers for E-MU USB (there were something fixed regarding S/PDIF functionality)?

There are two options for digital output listed on E-MU Control Panel ... is everything correct there? How have you set the E-MU Direct Monitoring option (maybe has no effect on S/PDIF playback)?

Also, the Beatport SYNC is not as complicated to set up for ASIO  as the Foobar is. Foobar also have some 'bug' w/ E_MU USB (does not keep the settings for ASIO virtual devices).

If your speaker system has S/PDIF input (there are internal DACs then) or you have connected your analog speakers into an amplifier w/ S/PDIF input then, no, you don't need another DAC there ... otherwise, you'll need to connect the speakers or amplifier through analog path or get another DAC but, as the E-MU has an excellent DAC already ...

update. the 0404 is seemingly faulty[which is good...] according to Thomann.de[place of purchase]. good ppl to deal with. they are organising to collect the device from me and replace or refund as is necessary.
found a ''new'' player[beatport] thanks to this disaster, but am glad of that, seems to be good. I came across it a few years ago and wasn't too impressed, but it seems ok.

Same topic, additional questions.....

The E-MU 0404 USB looks like the device to buy for my PC audio needs.  I don't mind the external power supply, and the specs look very good.  (MIDI interface is a good addition also)..  I like a USB interface as opposed to a PCI card.

Any recommended places to purchase one?  I see that 'Florida Music Company' appears to have a good advertised price.  Are the reputable?  Any issues with them?

Also, any recommendations on a reasonable quality, low cost phono preamp?? (MM only).

If you're in Europe, Dolphin Music is a good store. I've ordered from them in the past because no credit card was necessary.

The USB device is kind of limited in what it can do. Unlike PCI cards, you don't get PatchMix which truly unlocks the full potential of a soundcard.
