Hazard Using Cell During a Storm

Hello everybody,
I'm doing some research how to do an experiment which will allow to evaluate the risks using cell/mobile during a storm. I want to lay down the recommendations for cell user to reduce safety hazard under these conditions. I'm just in the beginning of my research with my team. Currently, we just study our local characteristic whether, standard of domain in system mobile, and also a liltle bit about ironization. Is there anything else that may could help us?
thanks..

That sounds like an interesting research project. What type of project is this an Electrical Engineering capstone one? What exactly are you studying, the effects of packet loss or transmission during the storm, meaning CDMA stuff? At least that's what I would do for research. How about instead of analyzing the risks during a storm you take into consideration the risk of people driving and talking on their cell phone during rush hour traffic as well? that's a very big problem in the U.S. A very annoying one.

This isn't really on topic for HA, but I'll have a go nevertheless.

If you are inside, or somewhere else where there is protection from direct strikes, I can't imagine that there would be any risk in using a cell phone during a storm (provided that the charger wasn't plugged in). It seems to me that the functioning of the phone would have no effect whatsoever on your chances of getting hit by lightning. Being partially metalic and containing an explosive battery (Lithium Ion batteries can misbehave badly when abused), the phone is likely to cause severe burns and related injuries if you were actually hit by lightning.

As for an experiment, you could try putting a bunch of phones on the correct end (remeber to get the polarity right) of some sort of HV device which could simulate lightning. There are plenty of options for this (ranging from Van Den Graaf generators to much bigger shows). Initiate a call to one of the phones and see whether it is more likely to get hit. You would need to do a bunch of experiments to get a statistically significant result.

But if you are expecting lightning to "follow" the RF waves back into the phone, then you are going to be sorely dissapointed.

What exactly are you studying, the effects of packet loss or transmission during the storm, meaning CDMA stuff?
That's probably the biggest risk of using a cell phone in a storm - that your girlfriend will think you are saying "Do you want me to get with your sister?" instead of "Do you want to come around and play Twister?"

More seriously, Google will turn up many articles on the subject of ligtning strikes and phone use, some good some bad. Techdirt has one decent one.

first of all, i'm sorry because my topic is not suitable in that forum ahaa....sorry again.Ok..my research is on GSM (900Mhz to 1800Mhz). My biggest concern is how to do an experiment to determine or evaluate the risk using cell during the storm. For example on the golf field or a beach. This device/experiment will indicate the risk and will announce it for everybody to stop using the cell or turn it off. I just wanna get some advise or suggestion that will lead me to get the solution.Anyway thanks for ur answer...i appreciate it!!
