Adding RG info with Lame: what is the point if it isn't supported?

I can confirm that applying negative gain prior to lossy encoding reduces the bitrate a little bit (3-4 kbps on average, on my music collection). I didn't conduct ABX tests because I didn't notice an audible difference to begin with.
