HD380 pro vs Momentum

One is labeled "professional studio monitor", the other "audiophile", with a considerable price difference. I would have thought the two would be interchangeable, would anybody care to elaborate? I am leaning towards the 380 pro because I like the more traditional styling, replaceable parts, and yes that monster coiled cable. But if the momentums are somehow an audio experience light years beyond the 380 pros, and not just leather and suede styling I am interested.

I picked up a pair of HD 380 pros factory refurbs for a bit more than $100, so there was no angst when I found that I liked the way they sound quite a bit.

They are $160 right now brand new at amazon, making them even more tempting.

I haven't auditioned either headphone...

In marketing terminology...  Just words to give the customer a good feeling...    "Pro", doesn't necessarily mean it's for professionals (Koss Porta-Pro?  ).    "Audiophile" usually means top-of-the-line, or highest price range, or it's just a word to give you a good feeling about the product.

Real professionals are more concerned with ruggedness, reliability, and price, than audiophiles.  Many professional applications require isolation, so open headphones are often out of the question.  Design & appearance are more important to audiophiles.      Audiophiles are often very concerned with price too, where a higher price makes the product more desireable....

I dunno...  But once you get to a certain price/quality point (probably around $200 USD) it mostly becomes a matter of personal preference.   Some people will prefer the sound of one headphone, other people will prefer a different one (disregarding price).  Once you get beyond a certain point, it's also difficult to make a "light-year" leap...  You might pay a LOT more and you might get slightly better sound...  Or, you might prefer the cheaper model.

I don't have Momentum. But I find HD 380 the least comfortable of the headphones I've ever had (HD 490, HD 215, PX 100, HD 238, HD 518, in-ears etc.). It clamps and sweats.  Chances are the Momentum could be more comfortable.

The sound-stage is a bit narrower compared to the rest (don't know whether that's good or bad). Last but not least, HD 380 has a powerful low base, which some may like but I don't.

Clamping the head and good bass go hand-and-hand. Since you like neither, stay away from any closed ear pro headphone!

I love my HD 215, a pro closed headphone. They neither clamp nor have too much bass (quite the contrary). Maybe they are an exception but they prove that your statement is not universally true.

I tried the Momentums at the store. They're not bad, but they're quite bassy, and the cups are pretty small. They're supposed to be circum-aural (around the ears), but they're better suited for kids than adults, if you ask me.
