I've seen claims that the standard metrics of THD and IMD are irrelevant. Obviously, measuring THD at 1 KHz at a nominal volume is insufficient because distortion often increases at low frequencies and high output levels. Especially with gear that uses tubes and transformers. And masking doesnít hide higher order harmonics farther away from the source frequencies, so the specific makeup of the distortion affects its audibility. But the arguments Iíve seen that dismiss normal distortion tests don't seem compelling to me because they use contrived examples that donít occur naturally in audio circuits. Am I missing something?
