In conclusion, I was "dead wrong" and ought not have made my earlier ill-considered post.

Thank you for the report, LedHed8.
Next time, I'd like you to use ABC/HR software such as ABC/HR for Java 0.53a, because of three reasons below.
  • You won't be prejudiced to certain codecs because you don't know which one you are listening to, before and during the test.
  • We can see the degree of degradation as well as transparency. If it's not transparent, is it annoying? To what extent?
  • I streamlined the data processing for ABC/HR data, so I can help you more effectively.

LedHed8 thanks for testing.

One question only: how old are you?

Again, my attempt to reproduce this failed. What kind of artifacts did you hear, LedHed8?

An ABC/HR test of a single sample is completely unreliable unless it is repeated multiple times.  Even still, the results are only worthwhile for that one sample and that particular testee; not very interesting.

Thank you Kamedo2 for the info and advise on the ABC/HR software.  Yes, I certainly knew what I was listening for in each codec.  For this small sample, I wouldn't rate any of them as annoying in the slightest degree.

Kamedo2, thank you for testing.

mp3:  Slight smearing of the cymbals between seconds 8 and 9, and again at seconds 24 to 26.

aac:  Slightly, "brighter" sound on the cymbal crashes throughout.

vorbis:  Slight softening of the bass and drum beats.  Also, subtle colorization of the bass sounds that I can best describe as a "reverb effect".  Personally, I like the effect and sound of vorbis (as well as the increased battery life it provides with RockBox'd portable players), so I use it extensively for my portable music.
