Haven't touched Winamp for some years now ...

So I guess this means that the decoder is easier to find for those who install Winamp
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

GeSomeone: since it's not known how the nullsoft built version will be distributed it's hard to say if it will be easier to find though the older versions aren't all that hard to find anyway (though lack of mpc use in general hinders that all quite a bit)

kwanbis: true, though seeing as no one else has bothered to update in_mpc for however long and nullsoft have (with their one man coding team) updated it to work with the newer api support in winamp i wouldn't complain (at least someone has done more to the plugin than has been the case for too long  )

though really the general enthusiasm/interest between here and the winamp forums doesn't make the format look all that healthy (though i could be wrong...)

I remember that when the Nullsoft Vorbis plugin was released, AOL had their lawyers check it due to the patent issues.

Does this mean Musepack is in the clear?

I think some developer stated that the same patents apply as for layer 2 decoding which is already licensed for in_mp3. I am now wondering if that is a valid argument...

Not necessarily. Usually, companies license IP on the condition that it is used with standard-compliant implementations. The reason, AFAIK, is that's the condition the ISO imposes on their members: fair and non-discriminatory license terms, as long as the implementation follows the standard. The idea here is to leave IP owners free to charge whatever they want for licenses related to other purposes.

not sure to be honest with you, though i'm sure it wouldn't have been released unless benski was confident that it would be safe to do so (though the shear enthusiasm all across the board with mpc probably means it'll be a separate download heh)

You should. It has improved tremendously over the last year after its previous comatose state. As it is now, I actually prefer it over Foobar again.

This plug-in is a good thing for MusePack and Winamp:

MusePack is not "dead" as some people think;

And Winamp supports a format as well as the mighty FB2K

Didn't the last of those patents expire some years ago?

These days you can hardly tell when or who will come up with a patent case, you thought you had covered. Look at the Microsoft case where they were already paying $16 Million to Frauenhofer, but were sued by Alcatel-Lucent.

Why is the old question about patents brought up so often with Musepack, without new facts? (Are LAME, FAAC "in the clear"?)

as a former winamp user, can you tell me why is better now than fb2k?

Because it looks prettier
Agree. For those approx. 99% computer users who are not techno-whizzes that have the mental capacity to tweak foobar to their liking, I'd recommend using a ready-to-use-and-prettify software like WinAmp.

I mean, come on, they have only 3 needs of an audio player:
1. Listening to music
2. Listening to music
3. Prettifying the player

For users anal about music organization, I always recommend MediaMonkey.

Hmm... in fact, I can only recall recommending foobar to 2 (two) other users ever since I used foobar version 0.9 (which is the first foobar I ever used).

This plugin fails to load in my Winamp versions 2.95 and 5.08c. I guess I'll continue to use v0.99g. This input component ignores the main reason why would anybody be interested in using Winamp – it's compatibility.

it requires 5.3x+ builds of winamp as is stated in the thread title since that's the current version and is only what the winamp dev team will support (especially since 5.3x added all of the replaygain, newer apis, etc which it needs to be a better implementation). the dev team have no reason to support legacy versions which have been clearly deprecated 3+ (even more than that with the unofficial 2.95 that you're using) years ago.
