Larger files with --alt-preset standard

Any ideas as to why files are smaller with --alt-preset fast standard -b 80 -Y than with --alt-preset standard -b 80 -Y
I get around 200k smaller or more. Are the VBR routines really that much different?

I've never used that command line but I would think the "fast" addition is the key,I will leave it to a more knowledgeable person to explain but I presume it filters at a slighly lower mhz.
Of course I could be way off in which case I will slope off with my tail beteen my legs

--alt-preset standard uses --vbr old
--alt-preset standard fast uses --vbr new

These are basically different encoding options, --vbr old being slower but a little better.
