AudioTester v1.6

I registered just to ask about this program since there doesn't seem to be any mention of it pre-2010.

FLAC Tester reports errors when testing 24-bit files, even though flac.exe itself tests them without issue. This is probably old news. However, I really prefer the FLAC Tester program and would prefer to continue using that, without having to test 24-bit files separately.

I read that AudioTester (from vuplayer.com) is the updated version of FLAC Tester, and it reads 24-bit files without issue, and it also tests the MP3 format which is a huge plus. I downloaded the program's zip file and tested it using a couple of online virus scanners. Jotti's Malware Scan and Virus Total both give one (false?) positive. I was going to risk using it anyway, but then I noticed on a separate computer that BitDefender refuses to display the website at all, and gives malware warnings. Also, the forums there were apparently shut down due to spam bots or somesuch.

Has AudioTester and/or the website been compromised? Also, is the program still relevant at all, or has it been replaced by something better?

I tried the program (right now) and it seems to be working. The internet web archive shows the page really was created in 2006, so it's probably a false positive. Of course, there are other possibilities, too. The program found some sync losses in my mp3's so I guess it's ok. However I have to wonder what it would check in flac files, without the originals there is no way for a program to tell if it was encoded correctly. It can probably find data corruption, though.

As far as I know, the FLAC container stores a checksum value of the raw audio data contained within. AudioTester simply performs a checksum of the raw audio data in the FLAC and compares it with the previously stored value to determine if they match. So it really is just a data corruption check, but that's still useful, as long as the file was encoded correctly from a known lossless source in the first place.


Anyway, I submitted the original FLACTester program and even it flags one positive. As do a few other programs such as Audiochecker and AuCDtectTaskManager. I am inclined to believe that VirusTotal just has a high false positive rate, but it would be nice to get some certain verification that these programs are okay to run.

Some virus scanners give more false positives than others on sites like Jotti, MetaScan, and VirusTotal, especially the Chinese made virus scanners. If the files are compressed with UPX that can increase the chance of a false positive.

I decided to try the program anyway and it seems fine. I'm not as confident about auCDtect Task Manager just yet, but I'll probably end up running it too when I've researched it enough.
