Why does it have to install Windows Media Player 10?

It's installing the Windows Media codecs (the so-called Windows Media Format redistributable) if they aren't already on your system.  It certainly doesn't install Windows Media Player.

Why does it install these codecs always, even if I unselect WMA playback in the installer?

have you unselected both WMA (under audio) and WMV (under video)?  If you unselected both, then it's a bug and I'll check it out.

I carefully unchecked everything Microsoft and CDDB. Still both got installed.

In fact, the second time I unselected everything apart from the MPEG decoder and the DirectSound output. Still Windows Media was downloaded and installed. Gracenote also got installed.
