Years and dates

For some reason, the tag where I've been writing release years for my tracks is called 'date' in Foobar. What's the point of that? Am I supposed to write the exact day the album was released? And if so, using which format? 2000-01-01 or...?

Further I've encountered people who, in compilation albums, for one artist or several, tag the files with their original release year rather than the year the compilation was released. Reason for this? Advantages? How should I do? I've been using the tag to be able to navigate between albums through year. For example in my phone, if I press "2005" I'll get the full albums for that year; if I tagged compilations with original release dates I'd see, say, if I pressed '2003,' 'Absolute Music 49' containing perhaps only one or two tracks, with the rest of the album scattered through the decades ...

Input very much appreciated.
