Hi Guys

I am a newbie to some of this technology, but played in bands years ago, and had a good stereo in the 70's and like all sort of music. Been using Mp3's for the last 3 years.

One reads a lot about one encoder being better than another. I would like to know what qualities one looks for in the Mp3 produced.

Eg is it
Clearer ?
Sharper ?
Rounder ?

What do you look for ?

None of the above. Most people look for a thing called "transparancy". Transparancy is reached when a person can't identify the compressed file from the original during a double-blind (ABX) test. This is of course different from person to person, but for MP3 e.g LAME 3.97b2 -V2 --vbr-new is considered transparant for most people on most samples.
