Any updates for the in_flac Winamp plugin?

I just wanted to ask if there are any updates planned for the in_flac Winamp plugin? X-fixers last release on his homepage seems to be from June 2nd 2003 (Beta 7).

Is it already supporting the new winamp metadata system for the ML (like Case's MPC plugin does already), or do we have to wait for an updated Winamp input SDK? (maybe Case could help out alternatively?)

thanks for any response.

Yes I want to know about a new (non-beta) FLAC plugin for Winamp 5 also.

I hope we see more audio apps supporting FLAC natively soon, so we can direct average listeners (with no knowledge of how to install plug-ins) to get players that can play our FLAC files we have for download. I see Foobar2000 now has flac native support. That's great!

If only Adobe Audition, MusicMatch, WinAmp 5, RealPlayer 10 and iTunes supported FLAC natively (without the need for plugins), that would really be nice!

winamp metadata system for the ML
what functionality does it offer that flac tags don't, for those of us not familiar with it?  there's a bit of a conundrum in adding functionality to a broadly used codec for use with a specific player.  it probably cuts the other way too.

Well, thanks to Mike Wren ( www.mikewren.com/flac ) the flac installer will install flac front end (encode and decode) AND the WinAmp2 plugin automatically.  If there's some critical functionality missing for WinAmp5 installation he'd probably like to know.

I'm all for better software tools for flac.  But is unzip, copy into plugins a barrier?  If so maybe the people at WinAmp need to hear from everyone, so it's included.

I was wondering the same thing. I just upgraded to Winamp 5 and I was hopeing there would be a new recent updated Flac plugin. One hopefully that would use less CPU usage since Winamp 5 seems to drain alot on my computer.

A bit Off Topic but I didn't wanted to create a topic just for that question I was asking myself :

Is there any chance that future winamp flac plugin display the codec version & the compression level (*setting) used ? Monkey Audio winamp plugin display these usefull information for .ape & I would like that the Flac plugin does the same ? It is just possible, is the compression level (*setting) info somewhere in the file ? I know it's possible to display the codec version as Foobar does it, but I dunno if it's possible for the compression level (*setting) info as neither Foobar nor Winamp display it ... is it due to ape tags Vs vorbis tags ?

I would really really like that the winamp plug display the codec version & compression level (*setting) ... this would be very usefull to me ...

Edit: *by compression level I mean Q0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (In the same way Monkey Audio winamp plug display Extra-High, High, Normal, Fast) not compression ratio in %

It doesn't add anything to the files.  It allows Winamp's Media Library to read the metadata from the tags for the Media Library.  Album, Artist, title and that junk.  Otherwise Winamp guesses that information from the File name.  So far the MP3, Vorbis and MP4 plug-ins have that capability.

Compression level = original file size (you deduce that from lenght)/compressed file size. It doesn't require a special tag.

FLAC stores a string in a special tag (the vendor string) that contains some info about the encoder that created it.  That could be displayed.

The compression setting is not stored anywhere.  It doesn't really make sense for FLAC where there can be multiple encoder implementations with different kinds of settings.

Ok Josh, thks for the clear answser,
you're really a developper that care about opinion/feedback/help newbie here on HA forum & that is a great strengh for Flac, I appreciate it much

I do understand that the switch that hide behind pre-selected settings like Q8 -best is only good for a specific version of the codec & that the tweak line behind a quality setting can change in the next codec version ... still I would hope that the compression setting data would be stored & readable on players' tag info window ... as if you know both the codec version & the compression setting, well you can get the line of tweak that hide behind that quality setting ...

... I really like Flac as it is now, & I am not like all the Monkey Audio users that ask for better compression ratio ... in fact not storing the data setting is the only small "flaw" I could find for Flac ...

... now I know you got my opinion which is the most important ... you got the last word ...
