[TOS #12] What does the Loudness war" actually SOUND like

I hear this term all of the time, but I still don't understand what is different about these over compressed  tracks compared to their older counterparts. Could someone perhaps link me to a track that's emblemic of the "old" style of mastering compared to the "loudness war" style of mastering and point out what's different about them? Thanks!

Here's an album comparison for you:  The Trinity Session (1988) by the Cowboy Junkies vs. The Mountain (2009) by the Heartless Bastards.  If one of the musicians had dropped a pin during the recording of The Trinity Session, one would be able to hear it on the commercial release.  By comparison, one wouldn't be able to hear a banshee screaming during the recording of The Mountain on the commercial release.  I'm sure you can find both albums on most streaming services.
