EncSpot 2.0

EncSpots scans & analyses MP3 files. It can determine the used encoder with very good accuracy and dig out all the possible information of the file. EncSpot also gives you warnings about low quality MP3 files, such as the ones encoded with XING or encoded with too low bitrate.

Uh... that's a well-known tool here, you know. It's like posting about Photoshop on a graphics forum.

I thought to reply to this earlier but I was hoping that others would be understanding of Oleg

I feel pretty new here as well so take it easy on us

@oleg - I understand the whole scene can seem overwhelming at first and your anxious to get answers to your questions and help others and just be part of the community, but take some time to read some of the topics and you'll notice some of the tools that people use (or at least refer to) such as encspot, foobar (foo), tag, tagger, etc.
This IMHO is the best audio forum on the net so look around the forums and if you do some searchs I'm sure you will probably find programs like encspot and other turn up quite frequently in posts.

I encourage you to keep contributing, welcome to the forum

There is a movie called Lord of the Rings 2.0 Towers.  It has a guy who rides around on a white horse who is is really dead but somehow alive again (the guy, not the horse).  It also has trees that get really pissed and beat ass on all these ugly guys and make a lot of water get on them.  Sometimes while watching the movie I got hungry for popcorn, but then I liked to see mega hot elf chicks so I didnt stop it.

Hey, lets not get stuck into Oleg too quickly  B)

Even if you know about Encspot, it isn't too easy to find a place to download it from, since its home page has vanished (http://www.guerillasoft.com/).  So Oleg's link is useful.

BTW, Encspot 2.0 is quite old -  are there any good alternatives?

You consider yourself as being a newbie , right. In my opinion  , when you find something new to you , the attitude should be: "Hey , I'll do a search on the HA forums to see if there is some info about this thing".
If you don't find any info that fulfills your curiosity , then post about it.Otherwise it's a waste of time and bandwidth.
I remember reading a lot of threads about Encspot.

Sometimes
FhG is Xing
QDesign is FhG
LAME 3.8x is GoGo 3
Fastenc is FhG ACM Pro if there is no ISO padding

Only LAME 3.9x is shown correctly, otherwise wrong info

no ABX needed for Xing, listen to Xing's 320 kbps, it cuts off at 16 kHz it is worst than LAME 128 kbps, totally sounds like "under water".

The two best functions of Encspot imo rarely get talked about. Thought I'd let anyone new to Encspot know about them ..

1. Bad last frame. Pretty self explanatory really but this'll tell you whether or not the mp3 is complete.

2. Synch error details. This is important to see if there are any corrupted frames within the mp3. Be sure to do a complete scan of those files since by default Encspot will only check the first 1000 frames.

I agree 'Bad Last Frame' is the most important encspot feature, especially if you download a lot of stuff without sfv/md5 files and need to check if the files are okay.

Can anyone reach the author?

Perhaps EncSpot Pro could be released as freeware, since the whole project seems to be abandonware?

hmm, have you ever tried "Mp3Trim"??? It is freeware and also tells when the first frame is missing (what EncSpot doesn't do); also it gives a warning if there are any missing frames or synch errors...
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.
LAME + Joint Stereo doesn't destroy 'Stereo'

Easier and faster with MP3utility.

Bad last frame is not the ultimate check for completeness. When there is a tag (not id3V2 ) you're pretty safe

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

Options > Settings > Columns > Tick synch errors box under general.

To use synch detection fully, browse to folder > highlight all your mp3s > right click, choose complete scan.

It indicates whether the "original" bit is set in the bitstream.

I've read various descriptions on what it actually means, but I can't really remember (I haven't cared enough). But it has nothing to do with the actual audio of the file, and it doesn't matter if it's set or unset.
