FAAD2 officially released

FAAD2 officially released. Find out more at http://www.audiocoding.com

Source code available for download now, as well as the compiled Winamp MP4 plugin.

Big advantages over old vesions:
- no more code from third parties.
- fast and portable.
- PNS working.
- clean code, easier to understand the algorithms.
- 24 and 32 bit output
- direct decoding from MP4 files.

Can I offer the output plugins for download safely? Coz I would put the VS.NET compiles on my site then.

In Belgium? I wouldn't count on it. Roberto has gotten letters from the patent fascists at Dolby but since he's in Brazil, a civilized country which doesn't recognize software patents, he has been safe (so far).

The new plugin with FAAD2 is called in_faad, so look for that.

If you want to be safe I wouldn't put binaries on your site.

Oke, I'm making unmanaged std Win32 plugins, and from the IN_MP4.DLL I make a MSIL version for the .NET freaks like me (It works fine). I'll pm Roberto the links.

Have you already tested them to see if they are faster?

If they are, I would gladly host them.

You the MAN Menno! I tried to drum up some interest in helping to improve the quality of FAAC around here but got nowhere except breeding animosity. It seems that several people are afraid that Dolby will take action to have sources removed and therefore working on them would be a "waste of time".  And Ivan is concerned that commercial developers would steal any innovations achieved in an open source project (at least I think that was his objection). Anyway, I for one think you're doing a fantastic job! Heck, I still have some old MBSoft encodes that sound amazingly good...

Only slightly faster.

The encode needed 9:46 with the VS6 version, and 9:28 with the VS.NET version on my box. I dunno if this is due to the compiler optimization or the disk caching.

I'll send the binaries to your mail account then.

Thanks layer3maniac :-)

I hope that AAC will become a bit more popular once the MP4 file fomat gets a bit more mainstream. I believe that fee MP4 decoders will be possible (they are aleady there (Philips, Envivio)).
Public AAC source code will never be illegal. Dolby never had an arguement against that and since I removed all binaries I've never heard from them anymore.

So FAAD2 is basically in the same situation that Lame is in, where the source code is readily available but binaries are supposed to be illegal? I can live with that!

Also, if this doesn't test anybody's patience, could someone explain to me about FAAD2? From what I understand, it is an AAC program, like Psytel's AACENC. Does FAAD2 and AACENC produce pretty much the same thing? For example, can the WinAMP plugin for FAAD2 decode aac files created by AACENC?

Thanks,

Agent69:)

FAAD2 is only the AAC decoder part. A complete new encoder will follow in a few months (I hope)

Besides not recognizing software patents, I discovered today that we don't have cryptography controls - at all.
