How to recover data about media library after HDD crash

hdd died or got damaged or something else, have no idea...
couple of programs i have tried could restore at least some data from it but there is no original file/folder structure which is all about:) like i have observed foobar's media library scans constantly all the sh*t you have gave to him and writes it down.
so how it is all written down? is it possible to get file/folder list from database.dat? and of course any suggestions on how to recover faulty hdd are also welcome
