USB Sound Cards

I have a Creative MP3+, or Creative Digital Music as it's called in Asia, and while it is probably not quite up to par compared to decent Desktop PC based sound cards, it is much better than your typical laptop onboard chipset, and it has optical/digital in and out etc, for my MD.

Also priced quite competitively in Asia. I paid Sing$89 for mine at Changi airport a few weeks back. Probably cheaper now.  Also small and very portable. Just don't get too carried away with the software that comes with it. Replace the Creative media centre stuff with Foobar, and you're laughing.
