Stereo to mono mix

I want to mix some stereo mp3's to mono to listen with headphones because I only have hearing in one ear. I tried Audacity and Goldwave, and I see they produce different results. Can anyone shed some light on which produces the better mix? Here are screenshots of a couple of files I converted:

Or if you know of another free program that does a good job, please let me know.

Have you considered a mono mix cord before your 'phones? You wouldn't need to do anything to any program material.
