XLD: 1 track of new CD not found by AccurateRip, “may not be accurate”

Hi,
I have just bought Symphony X - The Odyssey (Limited Edition). When I rip it using XLD 20120407 all tracks except one rip perfectly. I have verified with many other disc that all settings are correct.

With a Confidence of 11 it is likely your rip has the issues, perhaps a manufacturing defect on the disc. Try re-ripping the same track over and over, if the CRC changes then it is your disc with the error.

I have tried ripping it several times, the CRC remained the same. It might just be a matter of time before it changes. How common are manufacturing defects? I bought the CD still sealed, though it has been in storage a very long time.

There seem to exist multiple pressings of this CD and more than one "Limited Edition" to include a Japanese version with exclusive tracks.

I can't be certain which one yours is, but track 8 is "The Odyssey" which is over 24 minutes long. It's quite possible that it couldn't be ripped to match the 11 others (defective) or that you have a pressing that is unique to the 11 submitted to AR (wherein the track is not exactly the same.)

(I don't actually own the CD though I have a two others and a record by this band.)

Personally, I don't know what XLD is (other than obviously it's a ripper) but... and I'm using EAC, which I'm very familiar with as my reference, so I'm not sure what features you do or don't have... have you:

Attempted to rip in file-per-track mode (each track is ripped to its own file)
vs.
Attempted to rip in disc-at-once or "image" mode where the entire disc is ripped to a single output file?

That would be my first thing to try, do the opposite of what you're doing (so it looks like you should try ripping to a single file) and see if the result changes.

Other things to check would be:
1- If you rip the same track multiple times, are you consistently getting the same CRC for YOUR file (not considering AR at all)?
2- Can you do a test+rip to see if you get a consistent CRC in a single ripping session?

I know that I rip in to single file/image, then encode to FLAC, then embed the CUESHEET and ART; that last part was immaterial, but I notice you will get different match results when using file-per-track vs. image ripping. Almost always the image rip AR+ count is much lower... but it's not an incorrect rip, because I may have tons of AR matches either way that I rip the disc... but the counts differ. I am pretty positive about this, I never leave out the possibility that I'm completely making things up, but this seems fairly certain. Let me test something really quick.

Maybe I'm full of it. My image rip matched 31/31 on the CTDB, 6/9 perfect match on AR and 3/9 matched with +6 offset (I know my offset is good). So disregarding offset mine's fully perfect... though I agree that 9 matches seems very low for such a popular CD I'm testing. The reference rip that is file-per-track actually matched 31/31 also, but it matched 0/9 for the offsets (matches were in other offsets, no "0" offset matches) -- so turns out mine was actually "better" than that one if you want to consider offset matching to bring it to the detail level. Nevermind. Forget what the previous paragraph said, but do try what I said above that if you would and report back with your results. What OS and version are you using?

I have experienced this (very infrequent) problem before with XLD.

Try ripping the disc again, or even just track 8, in single pass burst mode and see what the results are. Every time I have encountered this problem of one particular track producing mismatched CRCs, a burst mode rip produces a perfect, AR-confirmed rip.

This did not work either. Perhaps the CD is "broken" after all?

Since the CRC was the same every time you ripped it, including in different modes, the likelihood is that your rip is good and, as Englesstaub mentioned, your disc is just a different pressing. It's possible that the disc is defective in a consistent way, but that's the less common way for a disc to be defective. Plus, ripping in different modes, as you did, reduces the chance we're seeing that. If you were using EAC, I'd tell you to enable C2 pointers and try another rip. I know very little about XLD, but maybe that'd be worthwhile here as well.

If you really want to investigate further, the thing to do would be to rip track 8 with a totally different optical drive (one with a different chipset). If a completely different drive returns the same CRC, the overwhelming likelihood is that your rip is correct.

You could also run your current rip through CueTools (if you have access to a Windows environment) just for kicks. I don't know if anyone else has ripped that disc and submitted it to the CueTools database, though.

If you really want to investigate further, the thing to do would be to rip track 8 with a totally different optical drive (one with a different chipset). If a completely different drive returns the same CRC, the overwhelming likelihood is that your rip is correct.

You could also run your current rip through CueTools (if you have access to a Windows environment) just for kicks. I don't know if anyone else has ripped that disc and submitted it to the CueTools database, though.

Actually, the AR CRCs for your tracks are different than his. His only match AR and yours (with the exception of track 8) after a -18 offset. So it would appear you have different releases/pressings.

He's got it set to +102, which has a confidence of 104 on this page, however, his log says:

Yeah, that's not right. You seem to be mixing up a drive's read offset (and offset correction) with different disc pressings being offset from one another. Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong, it seems like you're trying to draw a relationship between the number of people that have submitted offset data for the UJ-898 (104) and the number of people that have submitted results for a pressing of the CD in question (105). Those values are unrelated. That they are only one apart is just coincidence.

In this particular case, the "list of alternate offset correction values" is telling us that the two pressings in the database are -18 and -93 samples offset relative to the disc the original poster has. Again, this has nothing to do with the drive; the UJ-898 definitely has a -102 read offset (and therefore needs a +102 offset correction).

As for changing the offset correction value in the ripping program, there's no point since it wouldn't change the results. AR2 (and CueTools as well) can crosscheck against different pressings, so manually trying to make a disc line up with a different pressing isn't useful anymore. Indeed, we can see in the log that, except for track 8, the rip was already verified against the pressing with a -18 relative offset. Also, for whatever it's worth, I'm not sure changing the offset correction is easily doable, anyway. I know with EAC that if you have AccurateRip enabled, you can't tinker with the offset correction value. Maybe XLD is the same?

AR2 is only an algorithm change. It has nothing to do with checking against alternate pressings. In fact, the algorithm change has actually made checking against alternate pressings more difficult.
