Does anyone experience this issue that files encoded with Lame MP3 do not play back gapless on an iPod Touch over "Home Sharing"

Copying to the iPod Touch then gapless works fine.

I have tried different apps to encode to MP3 and 3 different iPods.

Any suggestions ?

I am sorry, I am not sure what do you mean.
Do you stream the music from some home server to iPod Touch?

Do you stream the music from some home server to iPod Touch?

Seems to be an official feature since iOS 4.1. You can access your computer's iTunes library from your iOS device.

Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household. You can also use Home Sharing to play your iTunes content on your iOS devices and Apple TV (2nd generation) if they are connected to your home Wi-Fi network.

Lame Mp3 simply do not play back gapless over home sharing.

I doubt it's anything to do with LAME. Did you test it with any other encoders? What were the results? It's not clear from your original post. Of course copying to the device will work as it's not using the streaming software at all.

As an example most DLNA streamers won't do gapless playback due to the way it works. It could just be the way Apple have implemented streaming?

Apple Lossless, AAC, Mp3 encoded with iTunes all play back gapless over "Home Sharing" it is only Mp3's with Lame that don't. I have tired with serval application to create a lame mp3. They not Gapless only on an iPod Touch i have tried 3 different iPod Touch all the same results. Using "Home Sharing" with an Apple TV Lame MP3's do play back gapless. I assume this is an issue of the iPod.

It's not too much of a concern as i have all my music backed up in Apple Lossless i can just transcode to AAC i just rather have my music in MP3 for more compatibility with other devices.

AAC and MP3 weren't designed for gapless playback; the encoding process adds some "junk" samples on each end of the file, and the decoding process adds some junk samples to the beginning of the playback stream. The player will know what the decoder added, so it will skip that junk, but it doesn't know what was added by the encoder unless the file is tagged somehow. The problem is that there's no standard way of tagging for this purpose. iTunes/QuickTime does it one way, LAME does it another. Apparently the iPod firmware hasn't been designed with support for gapless playback of files tagged with LAME's method. I would not fault LAME for this.

I just find it strange that it doesn't work with the iPod Touch but it works perfectly with an Apple TV2 when essentially they are running the exact same specs and OS.

In the morning i might give Apple a call see what they say.

Good luck with that. I would assume the answer from them will be that they only support their own encoder.

In their tech specs it doesn't state only with the iTunes encoder so it should work with all. Since the Apple TV and iPad, Lame mp3 plays gapless it must be an issue with the iPod touch.

Oh well looks like i'll be switching to AAC.
