Drag and drop won't work from a read-only media

Hi. I have some burned DVD-Rs with music and I just can't drag and drop files or folders from the Windows Explorer to the foobar default playlist. The player refuses to add the files or folders and will show me that circle with a slash, meaning "prohibited".

I'm guessing this is a problem with read-only media such as burned DVD-Rs, because foobar won't behave like that with my USB drives.

The only way to play the files burned to DVD-Rs is from the options "add files/folders", which takes more time and is less user-friendly.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but I wish I could drag and drop files or folders from my DVD-Rs using the Windows Explorer. I've been used to doing that for years with Windows Media Player and Winamp.

Has this issue already been addressed?

I'm using XP SP2 x86 and 7 x64 with latest foobar release and am having the same results in both OSs.

Thanks for your time and work and congratulations for this great program.

Have you tried to add the whole DVD at once? (by dragging the drive icon) This works for example with normal audio cds.

I haven't. But I have some burned DVD-Rs full of music (a DVD-R = ~ 4,3GB), and some times I only want to listen to some of my music files. Dragging the DVD drive icon from the Windows Explorer to the foobar playlist (if it ever worked) would likely add the entire content from the DVD, which would take me more time to remove the undesired music from the playlist than picking the files/folders separately by using the "add files/folders" option.

Maybe that's because I've never even tried it: this is not a good solution for this problem.

Anyway, if you or anyone else have some burned DVD-R or CD-R with mp3 music around please try to drag the files/folders from the Windows Explorer to the foobar default playlist and check whether the player will behave differently than mine.

Thank you for your time.

I've checked that dragging the DVD drive icon from the Windows Explorer to the foobar default playlist will work. But, as I've already said in my last post, that ain't a good solution for this problem.

I've tried the drag and drop process with files/folders from a burned DVD-R media using the Windows Explorer on a Vista x64 installation and foobar didn't support the process neither.

So, issue confirmed.

I hope the developers can fix this if it's ever possible.

In the meantime users that experience this issue are supposed to use another player which supports that feature (I'm using WMP to do that with my mp3 backups).

It's been almost one year since this issue's been reported and I'm still having the same problem with latest stable release 1.1.13 (was using 1.1.8 at that time when I created the thread). Now I'm using Win 7 x64 and foobar2000 continues showing me a black circle with a slash meaning "prohibited" when trying to drag and drop files from a read-only-media (CD, DVD and very likely BD-ROM).

This issue has also been recently reported by another user here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=95919

Has this problem already been confirmed? Could the developers comment on this?

The drag and drop feature is fully supported by most players out there and would like to have that in foobar2000 too because I like this player a lot.

Thank you so much.

In my tests, drag-n-drop to a playlist from a CD-R via Explorer was possible with Columns UI, but not the Default UI. Windows XP, foobar2000 v1.1.13. I searched but could not find an explanation.

I don't really know what "Columns" and "Dafault" UI are. Would you mind posting some screenshots?

However, I think foobar2000 is a very light software and was supposed to support drag and drop from CD/DVD/BD-ROM without any special requeriments, like any other player around.

Thanks for the reply.

:/

I was hoping I will find an answer to my problem but I found only that it's not only mine problem and it's still unsolved... dezraj has right - dragging single files from read-only media doesn't work on both XP SP3 x86 and 7 x64 SP1 - on foobar 1.1.9 and on 1.1.11 and on 1.1.13... I thought maybe I configured something in wrong way, but now I see that it's just foobar issue... Please - any help from developers ?

Strangely this doesn't work only for optical media (read-only SD card = fine).
Worked-around for the next version, thanks for reporting.

I've just tested version 1.1.15 and the problem is fixed.

Peter, I suppose there's a difference between "work around" and "fix", no? Why was it "worked around" and not "fixed"? Would you mind explaining why it was happening?

Thank you for your time and work.

PS: happy birthday to this thread!

Apparently Windows doesn't want you to "link" to objects on optical media - must support "copy" effect in such cases - even though there's no such problem with other types of removable media?
Same problem affects drag&drop from the Firefox downloads window.
