Knowing wine from experience, global keyboard shortcuts do not work at all. I don't think AppleScript automation works either, unless invoking the foobar2000 application with the correct command line switches works like Windows. (Or like invoking the foobar2000.exe with wine under Linux or FreeBSD. I'm not sure how it works when it's an App bundle like this.)

is there any way to get shortcuts working?

i understand that some people are using a virtual computer to run foobar on mac, as stated on the first page of this thread.
do global keyboard work with that?

would the apple remote work?

the thing is, i am planning on buying a new computer, either mac or pc. and i'm basing my decision almost purely on the foobar-factor. pretty ridiculous but i just love foobar's efficiency.

If you don't care, I'd get a PC.
I get a lot out of my Mac, but can't do without foobar, so I'm running XP in VMware Fusion purely in order to use foobar smile.gif Although it also means I always have a PC for testing things, plugging in NTFS drives etc.

So. I get the global shortcuts working through a combination of stupid things. I still haven't got the "skip forward/backward 10 secs" feature working but don't really mind.
I use foo_httpcontrol, which is way cool anyway. With it setup, you can request a URL like:
CODE
http://192.168.56.138:8888/default/?cmd=StartNext&param1=

where the IP address is the IP address of the virtual machine (this may work fine in Wine - maybe even with localhost? Not sure)
This will skip to the next track, obvs.

With that information, I write an AppleScript that requests that URL:

CODE
do shell script "/opt/local/bin/wget -qO /dev/null http://192.168.56.138:8888/default/?cmd=StartNext&param1="

using wget, sending the output to /dev/null - because we don't actually want to view the page, just get the command sent to foobar.

So how do you trigger these AppleScripts? Well, after a few different attempts at things, I now use a program called Spark to assign shortcuts to AppleScripts - it's more powerful than that, but you can write the AppleScripts in its own config, which is nice - it's not looking them up from a file or running an app or anything.

Even better, I then use the awesomest program for MacBooks, BetterTouchTool, to trigger those shortcuts with custom multi-touch trackpad gestures. Actually I really only use the trackpad gestures in foobar though.

So... it's convoluted but it works. There may be a better (more direct) option than foo_httpcontrol, which requires wget to access the URLs. And for some reason the command-line syntax for skipping 10 secs forward/back hasn't worked for me with foo_httpcontrol, so I'd be interested in sorting that out too sometime.
Drawbacks: sometimes the AppleScripts don't trigger immediately, so it's not a perfect solution. Mostly works fine though - OSX simply doesn't have a built-in solution for global hotkeys; one of the many bloody-mindedly stupid things that Apple and Macfans cling to ("why would you want to do that?")

Oh, and, no reason the Apple Remote wouldn't work if it works in Windows...

Just registrated to hopefully get an answer to my problem.

I can not seem to get the plugins to work in my version. The two plugins (and most importains) is the Kernel streming support and the foo_touchremote and they are both copied to the components folder according.

Any suggestions of what the problem is ?

I do not know both of the components but it seems that they may have windows dependencies you cannot privode with this setup.

Windows dependencies? Ok...but where other than http://www.foobar2000.org/components do I download the plugins for the Foobar mac version ?
Basiclly I need a bypassing streming plugin and the possibility to add a remote unit, like the iphone/ipad etc.

There is no Mac version of foobar2000, so there is no support or "mac-plugins". The App-Bundle here is a work-around with WINE to get it work on a Mac (or Linux). look at the post before yours, maybe this can help with your need for remote control. why do you need this "streaming-plugin" (what's that anyways?)?
Otherwise I would suggest to use a native mac music player (like iTunes or Play)...

callisto

this is great. thanks. i installed it, did a search on my hdd for foobar.exe, double-clicked it. foobar came up in my dock, with x11's icon popping up almost every 1 second. i click the foobar icon, and look at the menu to see if i can somehow pull up the fbk UI, but no luck. i'm on snow leopard 10.6.3. any ideas?

what exactly is popping up from X11? What menu do you mean when you click the foobar2000 icon?

QUOTE
What you get is a foobar2000.app that you can just double click on and it will load more or less like any other app

Maybe your problem lies in executing the foobar.exe which is inside the foobar2000.app! try just launching the .app, otherwise I have no Idea what's happening...

You are right.
but wine in mac does not understand greek characters in filenames.
Greek characters in tags appear right.
I tried setting LC variables but to no avail.

Thanx for the effort of trying to bring fb2k to mac users. Downloaded the bundle and installed. Droped the foobar folder to my applications. Now when I click on the foobar2000.exe nothing happens. Tried to open it with X11 but it only shows a terminal window. Where's my mistake?

Therein lies the problem! You must run foobar2000.app, the Wine-wrapped package. The Win32 exe is useless alone. After I ran the installer I found said app in my home folder.

just wanted to chime in and say you can get OSX like look if you install a OS X Aqua look-a-like windows theme under Wine.

Wine supports Windows XP based themes (skins for your windows and buttons etc).

Here is a suitable theme:
http://fav.me/d1i7m5d

and a guide for applying xp themes under wine:

http://gastly.wordpress.com/2007/06/18/app...themes-in-wine/

hope this helps!

Thanx for the advice dv1989. Didn't even notice the app. Now it works just fine.
Only thing's that wine seems to need a lot of resources, so that my book runs quite hot and blows like a steam horse. Can anyone confirme?
Again, thanx for the effort. Thanx for foobar.

Good stuff! I only used it briefly and didn't check anything like that--but while trying to add folders with many files, one method caused it to hang every time, while another worked (at least once) but was quite slow. I think I'll just use Boot Camp, as while foobar2000 is great, I only want to use it to copy tags between two sets.

THANK YOU SOOOOO much for this!
I tried installing fb2k by myself using wine, but your version runs much better!

I had one little problem and found a solution, which might interest others reading this:

on OSX, if you set a password for your account, all the folders in your Home folder are automatically password protected, including the music folder. This means that wine and ultimately foobar will not be able to write any tags or move files in the folder. This wasn't acceptable for me as I use fb2k for extensive tagging.

At first I tried to reset the normal permissions to allow group access and write, but no luck.
Then I found out that OSX uses an additional set of ACL permissions.

If you feel comfortable enough you can just delete them with the following command in Terminal.
(I'm assuming you are in your Home folder, since this is the default starting folder when you open a new Terminal window)

CODE
chmod -R -N Music

-R means it wil be done recursively for every folder and file in Music
-N means the ACL permissions will be removed
Music means it will be done for the Music folder

After this fb2k was able to write tags and move files inside the Music folder like a charm!

I hope this helps other people as well!

Now, at last, I have my favourite audio player again. Tagging is so much more fun with foobar. smile.gif
I cannot describe the happiness this brings. ^^

cheers,
Moogle

Thank you very much for putting this package together.

I'm sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but I haven't been able to install any additional components. I'm trying to add foo_playcount and foo_queuecontents. I've copied the .dll files for both of them into the Wine/prefixes/foobar2000/components folder, but when I look at the components in Foobar they aren't listed, and when I open the "Application install folder" under General in the Preferences window, they don't show in the components folder there. Apart from that, everything seems to be working fine. I'm running version 1.0

Apart from getting those two components to work, global keyboard shortcuts would be nice, but it seems the Mac system doesn't make that easy!

Strangest thing started happening a couple days ago. I transferred my music collection over to a larger hard drive, but with the same exact volume name, folder organization, etc. Foobar recognized the new drive without any problems and browsing / editing / playback were all fine. However when exiting the program I now get this message:

Library file could not be written (bad allocation).
If you choose 'cancel', your recent library changes will be lost.

There are two options in this pop-up window - Retry and Cancel - and Retry never does anything so I'm forced to hit Cancel. Foobar closes, but now every time I open it, it has to re-import my entire collection all over again which takes 5 to 10 minutes.

I've deleted and re-installed the wine-wrapped package (v1.0) and it did not fix the problem. Anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm almost resigned to using Songbird on my Mac now, which isn't terrible but has really lackluster control over core things like artwork, various artists (no compilation tag support) and of course browsing. Things foobar really excels at. I hope this isn't the end of the road! crying.gif

(false alarm ... still getting the error.)

for some more info here are the components currently installed:
foo_uie_albumart 0.2.7.1
foo_albumlist 4.4
foo_ui_columns 0.3.8.3
foo_converter 1.4
foo_ui_std 0.9.5
Core 1.0
foo_rgscan 2.0.9
foo_dsp_std 1.0
foo_input_std 1.0

I read somewhere that this crash could be related to very large artwork images, specifically embedded in the COVERART tag, but i dont use that tag and all images are separate files in album folders. still, could the sheer size of all these files have something to do with the error? not a massive collection... we're talking about 650GB, 1900 albums mostly FLAC w/ high quality art scans.
