Wow, this sounds promising! I've been looking for a versatile audioplayer for OS X for a while now. Since iTunes was released it seems most developers abandoned their project, which is a shame. iTunes is a great player/jukebox for ordinary listening but it lacks some features for more expert/professional use. Features like a lot of file formats (I miss Ogg, WMA, Flac and WavPack the most) and more technical info about the song playing.

I switched from Windows to OS X about six months ago and the programs I miss most are programs like Foobar2000 and Winamp. A thing I really liked about Winamp was to be able see more technical info about the file, bitrate (or an average in case of VBR), samplerate, stereo-type (mono, stereo, joint stereo) and more.

I think there is a 'market' for a more expert alternative to iTunes on OS X. A welcome side-effect could be that a very popular audioplayer next to iTunes that has features iTunes is still lacking (gapless playback, HE-AAC, etc.) might persuade Apple to finally add these features to iTunes.

That info can be viewed in iTunes as well; get info on the file or configure the view options to always make them visible.

I asume you mean Bitrate and Samplerate? I am aware of that, it still doesn't show things like stereomode (Joint-Stereo for MP3's for instance) though.

Wrong, it shows bitrate, stereomode, samplerate, filesize, ID3 version and encoder.

I stand corrected, you're right.

Nevertheless, I would still like to have a more 'techie' audioplayer besides iTunes on the OS X platfom, at least one that plays Ogg, WMA, Flac, Wavpack and Ape. Any news Dibrom?

It's been a while since you've posted Dibrom, anything new to report?

Woah that would be awesome. Currently the only other alternative is Cog ... which hasnt been updated since June '05. I dont really like Cog but it the works. Having something else would be quite cool.

I mentioned to my friend who works @ apple about HE-AAC. he says Itunes has had a bug-report since August 04 about it. I dunno what they are waiting for prolly something political as im sure it woudlnt be a technical issue.

I would leap for joy if this was ever released. I really hope it will be. Since switching to Mac, I've been "making do" with iTunes.

Any updates?

I'm just stopping by to say this is a great idea and I hope it's actually being made. I'm gonna sway from the group here and say I'd like this to have some Winamp like elements, most notably a simple yet advanced active playlist along with a library window that allows navigation with multiple panes (like iTunes's "browse" feature).

What I really like about Winamp over most other library/player programs is that the active playlist is always visible and I can see what's been played and what's coming up. Oh, and could you impliment automatic file organization based on tags. That is, when a file's metadata is changed Euphonos will rename it and apply the new location to any playlists referring to the file. This way ratings and other statistics are preserved and the filename always reflects the accurate tag information, which is unfortunatly impossible with Winamp.

This project is not really alive anymore, no.  I just don't have the time to work on the player these days, and I never got far enough along in working on it to where I felt I had something worth releasing.

I would still like to work on this some day, but it seems quite unlikely that I'll get to do that anytime real soon.

But who knows for certain...

Oh that's a shame.  If there's one area that the Mac needs more software in, it's audio players.  iTunes needs competition!

On another note, I'd be really interested just to see what you had so far.

Don't rule out Cog. It's making considerable improvements...

Yes, Cog could be an option. It needs .cue support though.

Dibrom, you should submit your idea to http://www.mydreamapp.com and have someone else make it.

Pretty please?! Since it's your idea and published to the net, ethically, and by rules of the site, none of us can enter something very similiar.

After much frustration these last days over the lack of a competent and good music player for OS X, I downloaded the beta of Crossover Office, and ran Foobar through that... I soo miss that program!  Wasn't stable for five cents, but still! All my tags worked, replaygain, the nice plugins like noise sharpening, stereophonic-to-binaural, and customizable, it handles everything I throw at it, .flac, .ape etc. Please, save me from my plight! Cog works, but it lacks so much in functionality.

I would pay for a music player somewhat like foobar for OS X.

Then why don't you? Set up a bounty for the features you want. Cog is open, any dev can add to it.
