Ripping Dvd 5.1 Audio

Just wondering, can someone tell me how to rip JUST the audio from a DVD? I have stuff like Rammstein's "Live aus Berlin" DVD and NIN's "All that could have been" that have 5.1 audio and I imagine it would be better quality than the CD versions plus it has the extra channels. I would like to rip it to a format that can be played back correctly by Winamp if possible (channels intact).

Any idea how big the files would be? Would they be readable by a plugin directly after being ripped or would I have to convert them?

BTW: Info from NIN's DVD

Audio Attribute :
Audio Coding mode : Dolby Digital
 Sampling Rate : 48kHz
Audio application mode : Not specified
Number of Audio channels : 6
 Bitrate : 448 Kbps
Number of Audio streams : 2

Thanks!

Using SmartRipper from Doom9 you can rip the Audio. Use the setting "Movie" then go to I believe Stream selection or something like that. You can then choose to only copy one of the Audio streams and none of the video. I believe that it is usually an AC3 stream and there should be a WinAMP plugin for it somewhere. HTH
Sorry, I have nothing witty to say here.

you will need a dvd ripper first (i suggest dvd decrypter) you can extract the ac3 (dolby digital) alone without the video you sould for that enable stream processing and chek the demux option for that.

The result is gonna be a 500 or 600 meg ac3 file , then for making a wave sound file you will need besweet and besweet gui

doom 9 - go see the guides !

Besweet can encode into a 2 channel stereo mp3 . but consider reading the guides on doom9!

but you can also leave you ac3 unchanged , like that with power dvd you can listen to the original everytime you want . (5.1)

go see the doom9 guides , they are very good !

go see Nin unplugged ? awesome nin performances from still disk (halo 17)

Great thanks
I can get the AC3 fine now....but are there any AC3 plugins for winamp that work with ALL 6 channels?

I dunno must about ac3 plugins but, how about converting your audio files to aac and using the in_faad plugin to play 5.1 channel files in winamp!

I think aac is supposed to be a newer version of ac3.

I think I should also mention, by doing this and using only 2 channel speakers, it will sound a bit weird as only the first 2 channels will be outputted!

Dolby Digital isn´t better quality than CD-Audio. It has more channels (6 instead of 2), higher saplerate (48000Hz instead of 44100Hz), but the data is compressed with the lossy ac3-Codec. So decompressing the ac3, converting it to CD-Audio (or even mp3) is stupid, because the quality is not better than CD, if you want to have mp3s it´s better you rip the CDs, because with reencoding in another format you will always lose quality.
So if you don´t need this 6 channels, CD is much better, even if you rip them to mp3 (with lame --alt-preset standard), the mp3 are better than ac3!

I have yet to hear a DVD with decent music quality.

The following are horrible:

* Cats (1998)
* Riverdance
* Lord of the Dance
* Sarah Brightman: One Night in Eden

I have stuff like Rammstein's "Live aus Berlin"

that dvd is one of the few that contains an uncompressed wav soundtrack (2ch) as well, i suggest ripping that one instead of ac3.

Interesting, thanks for the tip  So that should be better quality than the CD version? Or just the same?

I have the CD version of both of these DVDs, I just wanted to get some use out of my new speaker system

As for ac3 being lossy, I am aware of that. I DON'T want to convert it to anything else, I want to keep it in its original ac3 form so it won't become more lossy.

Would converting to 5.1 AAC or Surround CD result is lower quality? If so, thanks but no thanks

Question:

I'm about to create my first ever mp4 movie!  I was planning on using 5.1 audio.  The thing is, 5.1 sounded all wrong when I was testing out aac on 2 channel speakers!  Am I correct my assuming that 5.1 in a mp4 movie playing through 2 channel speakers will sound all wrong?

If yes!  is there anyway of having both options 5.1 and 2.1 (being able to downmix in real time while the movie is playing)

Its probably a crazy thought

Gabriele was doing a downmixer DirectShow filter for general use, mainly for 5.1 Vorbis . Find out more about it on http://www.everwicked.com and use the search function there on 'downmixing' and 'filter' .

Assuming nothing goes wrong during the Rip, quality should be the same.

AFAIK only Envivio uses DS for mp4 playback, and only one filter (i mean not that splitter / audio / video structure). Can this downmix filter put itself into chain somehow?

BTW there is another downmixer by Trombettworks.

Ligos has a MP4 playback filter as well.
http://www.ligos.com/lsx_mpeg_player.htm

And I think it's the demux -> audio/video structure (Since version 3.0, which I have, uses that structure)

That is Gabriele's filter.

I'v just extracted the 5.1 channel ac3 file which is around 400Mb, and converted it to 5.1 channel wav 4000Mb+.

Why is it that the extracted ac3 file plays perfectly in powerdvd when the wav played in winamp outputs speach through the right speaker and other very faint sounds thourgh the left speaker?

Wrong downmixing configuration?

AC3 & Windows use different channel mapping AFAIK.
In in_vorbis plugin one of configurations is called 'broken' (don't know which one is mentioned)

OK, the link below will show you 2 screen dumps.  Can you see anything wrong with the settings which would produce the results I'm getting in winamp when playing 5.1 wav?

HAIL TO THE LINK!

Huh...

Well, have you tried other AC3 decoders, like BeSweet, AC3dec... ?

Maybe HeadAC3he's downmixing routines are b0rk?

I think some remapping tool needed to meet your speakers configuration similar to one implemented in PP's vorbis plugin.

Besides why not to use DSPGuru's AACMachine for direct transcoding?

I think AAC transcoding depends on an intermediary Wav file, since AACenc has no stdin support (shame on Ivan )

Ripping Dvd 5.1 Audio

Yeah, not exactly direct transcoding.
Still source ac3 is beeing splitted to small parts and transcoding one by one.
So less space needed and all that remapping and dwnmixing stuff leaved to the mp4 decoder.
These are andvantages, i think

No!  I have not tried any of the other programs.  Looks like I'm gonna have to.  I think I'll leave it till tomorrow.

Anyway,  thanx for the info
