how SACD came to be

Mark Waldrep (of AIX records, which, it should be noted, favors PCM over DSD)  has posted an interesting  and concise history of how what started as an archiving format (DSD) became a commercial  product (SACD)  -- it accords pretty much with everything I've  read about this  previously.

The above can be summarized as: DSD is thus a solution looking for a problem.

That's a technical answer.

The business answer is that DSD was thought at the time to have a good potential for implementing a more reliable forms or Digital Rights Management (DRM).

As much you argue there is some reasoning behind buying and playing dsd for many. Like in the second link above explained ADCs these days work with bitstream inside. They are multibit meanwhile.
dsd fans understanding is that listening this bitstream sounds much better as the PCM'd output of it.
They trust there never was a PCM step involved. There are several new recordings done with analog mixing to tape only to capture this tape sound with the purity of dsd.
Silly if you ask me but most likely the most consequent digital evolution of vinyl.
Is troll-adiposity coming from feederism?
With 24bit music you can listen to silence much louder!

The history lesson is true.

The irony is that, though the best converters were 1-bit when the idea ocurred to Sony, by the time they were pushing this to consumers, the best converters were multibit again. Having invented a format based around the best contemporary converter technology, they could have done the same thing again ten years later with a totally different result. But they didn't.

Cheers,
David.
