alt-preset extreme: -V0 instead -V2?

--alt-preset extreme -V0

Is it possible? Is it correctly? Is it better?

my opinion:

yes yes NO!

IMO, unless you know at least as much as Dibrom about the inner workings of Lame, the chances of you changing the settings used by Dibrom in the alt-presets to make an improvement are about as likely as finding really good ice-cream on the Sun!

Hey, man. Melted ice cream can be good sometimes...

LOL, he was asking a question, and all he got back was funny replies. But I guess he was asking for it, cause I don't think it would be wise to change something that has been tested to the extent Dibrom's preset have been, and also so finely tuned as they already are.

Nope, you are likely to get worse results with -V0. You may think that theoretically, with a lower ATH curve due to -V0, you should get better quality. But in practice, this is not possible because of the MP3 framesize limitation. You can't get anything larger than 320kbps frames. --alt-preset extreme already use a lot of these 320kbps frames. By using -V0, you are making the encoder try to encode more inaudible stuffs at the expense of the audible stuffs, because only so many things can fit into a 320kbps frame.

Framesize is limited, of course. But number 320kbps frames must increase, instead 256, 224, etc. Why it may be worse?

Because those are not the problem frames.

For frames which are less than 320kbps in the original "--alt-preset extreme", yes there will be a quality increase if you use "--alt-preset extreme -V0". However, you have to consider that the quality increase will really be very limited, because with Dibrom's custom noise measuring techniques and -V2, frames which are less than 320kbps will be pretty much near transparent.

You will probably find that you won't get much out of the larger frames being used compared to the problems which overburdened 320kbps frames will give you.

Anyway, if you really want the best MP3 can give you, then you should use --alt-preset insane instead.
