Tagging causes playback to hang waiting for harddrive to spin up

Scenario: Re-playing tracks that are already in memory or cache (don't cause hard drive to spin up). Update tags for some other tracks that are on harddrive. Harddrive takes ~8 seconds to spin up. After ~5 seconds, playback hangs until tagging is completed (buffer ran out or something?).

Is this expected behavior? Is there any way to mitigate it?

Thanks

Yes, increase buffer size to 10 sec. (Preferences->Playback->Output).
It's only audiophile if it's inconvenient.

Damn, buffer length was already set at 16 sec. I guess my harddrive is a lot slower than I estimated. Trying 20 sec. Thanks!

Weird. Have you checked CPU loads during that wakeup time?

There's an advanced setting that prevents HD's from sleeping:

File > Preferences > Advanced > Playback >
  • Prevent hard disk sleep while playing.

That could help in some situations.
That's so plausible, I can't believe it.
