Best Settings for YouTube Video

What would you recommend as the best settings for converting videos to be uploaded on YouTube?

The last time a thread like this appeared was in 2006 and 2007 so the recommendations must've changed since then.

Some recommend H.264, some MPEG-2, others MPEG-4.

How do you do it?

To avoid confusion, I would like to point out that H.264 is part of the MPEG-4 standard.
