Why so many different LAME builds... somebody bring order!?

Hmm, I guess this is what you get with popular open source projects, everybody starts releasing their own builds...
If you're not active in this scene on a  daily basis it's really kinda hard to know what version is the best/fastest/most optimized/most recent/ideal for this or that purpose/etc etc...

There are so many pages with different builds made with different compilers and settings ...
eg:
http://www.hot.ee/smpman/mp3/
and http://mitiok.free.fr
(...insert many more...)
and this page is the true nightmare for non-diehards (and that doesn't mean n00bs btw) it has like 5 versions :
http://www.inf.ufpr.br/~rja00/

I know this is hard with an open source project with no real leadership or something like that, but i think it would be good if someone made a "semi-official" page about lame that lists the available builds with their compilers and the people who release them, plus some specific info and pro/contra.
A place that informs the public and points them to the best version in general; and if they want to choose themselfs gives info about the different builds.

just my 2 cents

[EDIT]hmm, maybe move this to MP3/MP3Pro General

????? What?
Don't understand... In my page there's only ONE version of lame: 3.90.2
1 CLI
3 DLLs, that should be used with CDex or CoolEdit so that people can use --alt-presets

Anyway, they all use the same encoding engine, and are compiled with the same compiler - what gives same quality and velocity.

If you want a page with "semi-official" builds, you should try Mitiok's one. That's where I went when I was looking for the latest version.

you don't get it
what if i don't know what CLI is ?
and what if i don't understand why you put 3 times the same (looks the same) dll in a zip
etc etc
a page that would bring clearness would be good...

I do not begrudge them this. But it sounds like something that mostly newbeys or amatures would ask. No insults intended. In most cases they do not need or most likely not percieve the difference. Maybey they do. But that is when they would stop being an amature and become a resident of the scene. The average Joe AOL user does not need the latest newest compile of the codec. So long as the product they use to encode comes with a newer stable version they are mostly fine and will never know the difference. We just have to ween most of em off of Xing. Yech! In the end some basic docs could be usefull. But if you are here to catch the links and read the threads then you most likely will already know all about them.

hmmz...
i'm no n00b aol dude bro...
not at all
i'm really active in the winamp forums and i've been messing with sound compression shit for some time
but really, i don't have the time to spend lots of time here to know what to download
can't you understand that without refering to noobness and crap like that?
having a page like i described would be good, there's no denial i think.
and informing the public better would also make a lot more people use lame instead of xing...
sigh... can't you just understand what i mean

Ok - you won!

I've already started thinking in a new layout for my page - I know it's horrible as it is - and i'll update it as soon as I arrive home from vacations.

I'll want it to be as "user friendly" as possible.

And I hope to have it up by the end of jan2002.

But till then, we'll have to keep up with my good old index page. (It all started as a point to distribute Sonique2, since, at that time, it was almost impossible to find it on the Net)

Thanks for the valuable suggestions. (please, keep them coming, everybody!)

Regards;

Roberto.

Hey man as stated no offense intended. I did not deny that your sugestion would help. I just was stating that more or less up untill now it has not been an issue. And it is not necessary to always have the latest version. In fact they can have some nasty suprises. I am still using an older version of Lame myself. Once the newer releases have been thuroghly tested and proven I will move on to them.

Any way keep on encoding! -
