what i want to know is does the audio quality of cd's differ from various band/labels or for that matter from cd to cd?

A huge factor in the final sound is the studio mastering - shitty mastering and excessive clipping will kill a "good" (however you define that) song very quickly.

horrible rampant clipping in many recent releases is just one reason I prefer vinyls over CDs in many cases
