How long is your longest EAC Rip?

My Comp just finished up the longest extraction I have ever done. Clocking in at just under 22 hours. It's intresting tho..  halfway through the rip I discovered I had a master copy of the same CD from 5 years ago.  Sure wish I had the log file for that extraction. Wouild be interesting to compare data. The last copy I made was 100% peak/97% Range (Written on old Copy)  Here's today's  log:

LOL!

I have that same album w/ the extra tracks and it's in such bad shape i've never been able to rip it, i know it's possible scince sometimes i put it in my stereo and plays fine and sometimes it doesn't. I always cancel the extraction after about 1 hour on Hit The Lights.

Maybe i should play the waiting game like you did.

I'll try again and if i succeed i'll post the log.

Hehe ya please do. I listened to it twice now and I hear no difference in quality. Sounds just as good as the original. Gotta love EAC!

Only thing that sucks about long extractions is it locks your system down.  But I found that if you hit the cancel button you can pause it so you can check your email etc..  just click No on the warrning window when you want to resume.

heh, thats nothing.  i found a particular old, relatively rare cd at a used cd store, and it was terribly damaged, significant scratches on both sides of the cd.  when i pointed it out to the manager, he said it was worthless, and gave it to me for free.  i then made it my personal mission to restore the cd as best i could.  i spent a good amount of time carefully resurfacing the bottom of the cd, and as you know, little to nothing can be done to repair scratches on the top of the cd, but i had heard that applying whiteout tape to the top surface over scratches will aid in tracking, so i did that.  i then started eac, and it worked on the cd for literally, 3 days!  it was making progress, but i finally gave up on it for fear that it would kill my drive, and because i needed to take my laptop to classes w/ me, i was starting to fall behind on my work...

i then gave the cd a shot in my roommate's plextor w/ plextools, and it was done in about an hour and a half iirc!  then i ran deglitch on it, and now i have a decent sounding rip!  it is by no means anywhere near perfect, there are audible errors, but none the less, i am pleased w/ the outcome from a "worthless" cd.

What is the point of doing a secure rip if it has this many errors that cannot be read correctly even after 82 (or whatever number it is) read attempts.  Isn't it recommended to just use Burst Mode in this case?

I Have tried countless times to rip the above-mentioned metallica CD in burst mode and got different results each time, and trying to find the rip with the least amount of audible errors will take a complete listen of each extracted WAV, and that takes forever.

I guess what I am asking is whether Secure Mode is really giving you a better rip than any random one of those Burst Mode rips since it is filled with errors anyway.  If you were to do a second Secure Mode rip, you would probably not get the exact same errors that you have now, correct?

Yes, it does give you a better rip.  Look at it this way...  If you are buying a used car, you look it over pretty good don't you?  Before you buy the car you look at it again right? And mabey you even look the car over once again before you sign the contract ya? What do you do when you get the car home?  ...you tend to go over the car with a fine tooth comb.  Cleaning, waxing, detailing, etc.. you are excited because you have a new ride.  You want to show it to everyone.

Another illustration: If you have a nasty scratch in the hood of your car what do you do?  The logical steps are to try and buff it out right? So.. do you go and grab a scratch pad from the kitchen to fix the problem? No! you want 600 - 1200 wet/dry sandpaper to work out the scratch, followed by some rubbing compound and a good buffer. Or visa versa...

...that's what secure mode does during a CD rip.

yeah, im my experience, you can watch the extraction and see if the secure mode is helping out.  if all rows of red lights light up before it goes to the next position, than eac could not find an accurate read for that position.  but sometimes, it will start the reread cycles, and move on before all red lights light, meaning that after a number of rereads, it finally got an accurate read on that position.  therefore, most of the time, i stick with secure mode.

i have too heard that sometimes, you will get a better sounding rip w/ burst mode, but afaik, that is because all of the errors are glossed over quickly in burst.  i perfer to use secure so eac will try to get an accurate read, but when that is impossible, i will go back w/ the tool, deglitch, to remove any audible clicks or pops.  it my experiences, it has worked great.
