I suppose you mean something like an ipod nano. The button jumped to another random song. I'm not sure now if sansa had an equivalent device.

Also the dumbest DAP ever.

Whatever your reasons for having such a(n) (in)convenient DAP are, hadn't you better having a voice-activated Rockboxed one? On the plus side, given the sheer number of audio players supported by this popular firmware, you could start including audio quality into your equation.

Another DAP not as far-fetched as that that I can think of is the now defunct (methinks) Sansa Shakers - but they looked more like a kid's toy rather than a proper serious DAP.

I don't think anybody builds an MP3 player that doesn't allow you to select songs, pause, skip-ahead, or skip-back, or adjust the volume, etc.

Nearest might be iPod Shuffle? Looks like you could use it as OP wants, though it does have the potential for a little more control.

I guess I speak for all of us who have posted so far we did read your OP!

You seem to have failed to understand that evidences (our posts, ebay and so on) emphatically point out to the fact that such a device (which would quite possibly be a total commercial flop) does not exist, so unless you're very skilled at  electronics, DIY and things like Arduino kits, I'd strongly advise you to start giving our suggestions a thought (did you bother looking at them BTW?) and be prepared to make concessions to the real world alternatives there are.

This is the closest thing I've found: MP3 player for disabled people (did it occur to anyone else that maybe the OP had a disabled person in mind?).

I guess most of us considered that as a possibility but firstly, he didn't find it necessary to mention it and finally, it doesn't actually change the fact that he quite possibly won't find such a player and the suggestions or advices so far are as sound (no intended pun) as they can be to his/someone else's needs. So IMHO, he can't be any worse off by taking heed of them and pondering the pros and cons.

This topic interests me because my father, who is almost 80, just requires a simple mp3 player with a large, easy-to-find play button. The other buttons, while nice, would only serve to confuse him. He loves his music (and wants to drown out all the chatter from the ladies he will be travelling with). So, without all the snide remarks about it being a stupid product (there is a need for such a product), does anyone have any ideas on a player with a LARGE play button that is simple to use, and possibly has a LARGE display as well? It can have other buttons, as long as the play button is larger than the rest.

Yes, there is a market for something like this but it is extremely small compared to the DAP market as a whole.  People who want/need a simplistic DAP are an extreme niche and it's obvious that DAP manufacturers aren't going after that small niche.  It does nothing to take away from the people in that niche, it just means they are small enough that DAP manufacturers don't care about filling that category (especially the single button DAP).

The other aspect going against this topic is that DAP manufacturers are moving on.  The DAP market has become stagnant.  SanDisk hasn't really done anything new in a while other than update older designs with some newer features (like color screens), Creative's last effort came out two years ago, Sony is still pushing their Walkman that came out over a year ago (and was a minor refresh of a 1+ year old DAP), and even Apple hasn't done much to upgrade their DAPs (the iPod classic hasn't changed in 5 years, the iPod nano has remained the same for 2 years, the iPod shuffle hasn't changed in even longer, and the iPod touch still receives software updates but its hardware is 2 years old as well).

As it stands, your pickings are already slim.  Have you thought about going the touchscreen DAP route?  There are Android powered DAPs (I saw one at Best Buy the other day for $75).  It would have one power button and then you can implement a slew of software options for playback.  There are other, dedicated DAPs without touchscreens but they tend to be on the small side.  An iPod touch also might be right up their alley.  iOS is extremely easy to use and you can even enable a few modes making the display a lot easier to read.

This is a somewhat expensive product, but something cheaper and along similar lines might be what he needs.

For a software solution, there is at least one "big button" iPad app that I've seen. One big play/pause button, sometimes with slightly smaller back/forward buttons too.
