Since some time I notice that SPAM posts are deleted but the spammers not banned.

The newest example is walkman6009 whose member profile says he is still a member and his personal statement contains one of his advertised links, only his post was deleted.

What software?! Most spammers are dealt with manually by a moderator, often with the help of a conscientious member, or members, who reported the post. wink.gif

I am unaware of the member that you mention. Most of the time the posts contain the link; posts are sent to Limbo and the user banned. URIs in sigs is a slightly more complicated matter, and - as often is the case - it's really down to you guys/gals to highlight any devious goings on, and us mods to act as we see fit (both as a team, but more often than not as an individual). IIRC I have seen URIs removed from members' sigs. It may partly depend on the quality of the posts the member makes.

Edit: sorry, for "sigs" read "sigs/personal statements". Thanks for the info Robertina, glad to have you around. smile.gif

I was told some weeks ago it would not be necessarily to report each SPAM post I find (it seems I found a lot of them) because some build-in "software" functionality would be able to detect them automatically if they fulfill certain criteria. That would be the reason why my SPAM reports would cause additional work for the moderators.

walkman6009 posts today in the morning Viagra links in his first and single post, that post was deleted, but he not banned. In the moment where I write this answer the SPAM link in his member profile has been removed but he is still a member here and not banned. Also I noticed in the last days SPAM posts advertising a video software (the URL contained tipard or so) and this members, often with female names, also were not banned.

In the meantime I think for some things which seem simple to be I am too stupidly and I will concentrate on my own tasks.

Hmm, confused. I do understand that there are some measures in place to stop spam automatically, but I have to deal with spam that does get through most days, and - although I do catch some posts before I receive a report - I often rely on the reports of conscientious members to warn me of such posts. To clarify: some auomatic measures are in place, but a lot of spam is still dealt with by mods manually, often following reports from members...

I am very surprised to hear that.

I removed the URI, and also took some further precautionary measures, but I had no knowledge of any spam posts, so did not ban the account.

It's probably worth mentioning here again that such actions are always at the discretion of the acting moderator; some may choose more wisely than others, and there is no step-by-step guide to follow.

Again, I am surprised.

I used to have to just warn and block such users, and wait for an admin to ban, but now I have the ability to ban members myself. Perhaps the moderator dealing with the posts still requires assistance to ban, I don't know.

AFAIK HA still relies on conscientious members such as yourself, and it seems that you have been given conflicting feedback regarding reporting posts, etc., so I really don't think that you were wrong to raise the issue. That said, I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it - perhaps we mods are dealing with spam in conflicting manners (because there are no rules), but be assured that we all take the issue seriously.

All moderators have been very kind to me and the explanation, why SPAM reports may mean additional work under certain circumstances, was comprehensible. My frustration has other roots: Spammers often arise here at the crack of first light (CET), at the same time when I am mostly here. So I find SPAM indeed mostly seconds after its publication and often the spammers are even still logged in, but the SPAM's deletion by moderators may take quite a while. However I think it is this span which makes spamming attractively for that kind of criminals and so this situation may annoy me more than others.

On top of that there are members where I can foresee that they will spam or violate the ToS, it is only a question of time. This member for example is such a case and the way of proceeding is always the same: first they are registrating in dozens of forums within a short period of time and hereafter they are beginning to spam. Here the mentioned member was already banned, here it already inserted its SPAM link into its user profile and so on. I expect the same thing to happen on Hydrogenaudio and when it will be happened and then only the post will be deleted but the member will not be banned - then I create threads like this one and I feel a little bit frustrated.

Of course behind unique member names there might be different users but in the past I was always right with my suspicion.

I think you are spending way too much time on this. We get to it when we get to it. While we appreciate your reports, our decision to ban or not ban is really not any of your concern.

greynol,

I explained why I as a member find a certain situation unsatisfactory sometimes and I gave for my point of view an objective description and example.

Instead of keeping to the point you get personal, your aggressive reaction would have been adequately if I would have tried to monopolize "ban rights" or other rights which only the forum's staff have but I didn't try that. Be assured that this has been my last comment concerning things round about Hydrogenaudio, okay?

Robertina.
