can't convert flac -> mp3

hey guys, i think that i have posted in the right forum for foobar. the problem is that i can't convert flac files to mp3. i have made minor changes to the preferences and since i cannot figure out what the problem is, i give you two screenshots of my preferences and if you find the wrong thing please tell me.

I can't see anything wrong with your settings (I must admit I lack the patience to be very good at spotting discrepancies) - assuming you do have LAME in your foobar folder.

What happens when you go to convert?

well, it pops up the console and has something like "flac decoder failed crc mismatched" or sth similar. i have saved a txt file if you like to see it.

the text file goes:

this is the whole file. sorry if i shouldn't post something too big.

[span style=\'font-size:8pt;line-height:100%\']moderation: posting big things is ok if you put them in codebox tags so people don't have to scroll past long crash logs, console logs, formatting strings etc if they just want to read the rest of the thread[/span]

hm, i ripped the files and converted them to flac with eac. maybe some of the settings are not good.

i'll see what i can do.

can someone post the settings of their foobar for converting flac to mp3? (just to see if they match mine)

Certainly looks that way.

Perhaps you should try decoding the FLAC files on the command line to see if this is a foobar/flac library problem, or if your files are definately corrupt.

If you're not familiar with the command line I can knock you up a quick batch file to use.

It doesn't really matter what format you are converting from.

Your diskwriter settings look fine.  You can test them by converting from some other file.

It seems to be an issue with the FLAC files themselves, not your diskwriter settings.

I don't see how EAC has in some way corrupted them.  I can only assume that your hard drive is on its way out, you were straining your PC while encoding, or something similar.

i'd be glad if you could do that.

i ripped the files in flac using eac at my other hard disk. i added them at flac frontend and clicked Test. Some of them had problems yes, and the message was:" FLAC__STREAM_DECODER_READ_FRAME"

is it more clear now?

OK, please download FLAC-TEST.BAT.  This is a quick convertion of my APE-DECODE.BAT batch file.

Open the BAT file in Notepad, amend the line:

Code: [Select]
SET pathToFlac="C:\DOS\FLAC.EXE"

... to point to your copy of FLAC, and save.

To run, drag either a FLAC file, or a folder containing FLAC files, onto the batch file icon. The batch file will report how many files were processed, and how many were unsuccessful.

That said, if you've already tested in FLAC Frontend, it does seem as though your FLAC files are definately knackered.  I have posted the above because I said I would.

Basically, I would put this file corruption down to some sort of hardware glitch.

It may be worth reading some of these threads (a search for 'FLAC__STREAM_DECODER_READ_FRAME')

Edit: I changed it to use -t to test, rather than decode (-d).  If it is of use you can also download FLAC-DECODE.BAT .

i still get these errors when i test the flacs with your bat. i cannot understand what's wrong even if i have tried a bundle of progs. anyway, since i cannot decode flacs to mp3s without problems i decided to leave the "flac thing". i'll get back to my loveable mp3s and continue to rip at this particular format.

i know you might say that i didn't give it a lot of tries but since i am still in the middle of exams, i will try later this summer.

thanks a lot for your help so far.

to Synthetic Soul: do you think you could compile a bat for mp3s? i know nothing about these things and i certainly don't want to put you into trouble, but is it possible?

Apparently you have corrupted files that were broken either during a transfer gone wrong or because they are/were stored on a dying optical medium (cdr or dvdr) - or if you have particularly bad luck, even because of a dying harddisk.

Not something you should take lightly in my opinion, but those are the only scenarios I can think of where flac files could end up being corrupted like that.

Please don't blame FLAC for this problem.  This is a hardware problem most likely.

That said, your exams are the most important thing.  Try again once you're done.

What do you want it to do?  Decode them to WAVE?

no no, just to test if they are ok.

the funny thing is that the hard disk that seems to be problematic is new-bought. i think i bought it (120GB) 6 months ago and i paid for it 100 euros. well ok, i don't blame flac for this.

during the summer, i'll try to do this procedure at my 350MHz PII to see if the problem is on my pc.

I'm not sure how you'd accomplish this.

As far as I know LAME has no switch to just verify an MP3. I also know of no other console application that can verify MP3s (although I'm sure there are some).

I did try just decoding to a temporary WAVE file that was then deleted.  I tested by corrupting an MP3 by deleting some bytes in a text editor.  However, instead of LAME stopping processing and reporting an error it simply resynched and continued decoding.

If anyone can point me to a console app to verify MP3 files I'll happily write the batch file.

In the meantime, here's MP3-TEST.BAT - which simply decodes MP3s to a temp WAVE file which is immediately deleted.  As per above, you'll have to look for possible problems in the LAME output for each file, as it won't show up as a full-on error.

The response I got for the corrupted file was:

Decoding: "C:\DOS\testing\AC DC\High Voltage\05 - T.N.T..mp3"
________________________________________________________________________
input:  C:\DOS\testing\AC DC\High Voltage\05 - T.N.T..mp3
        (44.1 kHz, 2 channels, MPEG-1 Layer III)
output: C:\DOS\testing\AC DC\High Voltage\temp.wav  (16 bit, Microsoft WAVE)
skipping initial 1105 samples (encoder+decoder delay)
Frame#    21/8218  160 kbps  MS    bitstream problem: resyncing...
Frame#  8211/8218    32 kbps  MS

I found a program that can test FLAC files for corruption etc.  Here is the link:
[a href="http://www.vuplayer.com/other.php]http://www.vuplayer.com/other.php[/url]
Look under the "audio file testers" section.

It has a GUI and can recurse subdirectories.  It will give a result at the end so it's easy to use unattended.  I manually went through a ton of FLAC files after finding some corruption on an old hard drive and this utility would have come in handy then.
