Help! MP3 Collection destroyed!

Yesterday I used ID3-TagIT to clean up the tags in my mp3 collection.  They're all MP3's that I encoded myself with either LAME 3.90 w/ --r3mix or 3.90.2 w/ --ap standard.  In ID3-TagIT I was using the remove ID3V1/2 functions, filename to tag functions, and tag conversion functions.  Now, none of my mp3s will play in winamp (using MAD or the nullsoft plugin).  I downloaded MP3/Tag Studio to attempt to repair the files, without any luck.  MP3/Tag Studio reports that the headers are out of sync.  I tried using LAME to decode the mp3s to wavs, and LAME also spewed out numerous out of sync errors.  Encspot won't show any info at all on the files, as if they aren't even there.  Is there any utitility I can use to repair these files??

Thanks for the ideas but with or without id3 tags the problem still persists.

And I already tried uncooking them.  The second program kennedyb4 linked to was the previously mentioned MP3/Tag Studio.

I'll see what that MP3 Doctor has to say about them...

MP3 Doctor was pretty much completely useless.  Didn't even give any error messages -- just didn't do anything.  And it's idea of being a doctor isn't really quite right... it can normalize, trim, resample, or change the volume.  Doesn't have any type of repairing function.

did a bit of testing to figure out exactly which operation killed my mp3s.  Using ID3-TagIT to do anything with ID3V2 tags completely destroys the file.  Whether it's adding a v2 tag, removing a v2 tag, or converting a v1 into v2 tag -- it just throws away most of my mp3.  I didn't notice before cause I didn't look at my mp3 file sizes, but i just ran it on a 7.6 meg mp3... after removing the id3v2 tag it was 2.5 megs.  the program seems to work just fine with v1 tags, but anything dealing with v2 tags will completely destroy the mp3s.

Maybe it's some weird interaction with windows XP cause I don't see how the author could have released the software in this condition.  I'll be contacting him to let him know.

Time to start re-encoding 10 gigs of mp3s

I don't want to sound glib at a time like this, but it only goes to show that there are only three rules in computing:

1. Backup;
2. Backup;
3. Backup.

I have ripped and coded 1/3rd of my CD collection so far. I have 30 Gb and have now stopped to back it all up to CDR before I go any further. Its a pain in the arse, but the above story demonstrates how necessary it is.

i use tag&rename 2.0 to tag my mp3 with v2.0 ID3..its work fine!
