WMP Tag Plus - MPEG4, Vorbis and FLAC metadata support for WMP

No sorry, I'm busy with Windows Media Player Plus! 2.0 at the moment. When that is finished, I'll probably start working on WMP Tag Plus 2.0, and then I'll also check if this can be worked around.

Downgrading WMP 12 on Windows 7 is pretty dangerous; I frequently see posts on WMP forums of users that have tried this and have broken their WMP installation this way. When that has happened, the only solution seems to be a full Windows reinstall. It's generally much easier and safer to install WMP 11 in Windows 7's (virtualized) XP Mode instead.

Also, Windows 7 SP1 Beta will be released soon, which means that there will be the possibility to provide feedback. I think that it will be worth trying to report this bug, to make Microsoft aware of it (sadly, this isn't the only bug with WMP 12 that needs to be reported).

I agree downgrading is dangerous (I stressed this), I have only tried it on a test installation not a live system but it worked for me. Apparently you can run the WIndows7 installer to 'repair' things to restore WMP12. Unfortunately WMP11 in the XP Mode may not be suitable (I have not tried it) it depends on whether it uses a totally separate set of files for its WMP library or can use the standard Windows7 WMP library files. If it uses its own then these will not be accessible by Media Center which is my goal.

If you find a feedback link for Windows7 SP1, please let me know here as I will add my feedback to yours. (More the merrier.)

Support for embedded album art will be available in the next major version of WMP Tag Plus, which will probably be released in a few months. Because WMP doesn't really rely on embedded art for the album art you see in the library, you might be able to already get this, by copy-pasting the cover image to the library, or by right-clicking a track and selecting Find album info.

(I really need to write a FAQ that answers common questions like this.)

I finally found some time to install Windows 7 and SP1 Beta in a VM, and quickly confirmed that lossless M4A files are still added to Other Media (unless you work around it by changing the extension to .mp4).

Unless I missed something, it seems that the only place to post feedback is the Service Pack 1 Beta for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 forum, so that's a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, I'll still report it there (probably together with some other WMP bugs), as soon as I have some more time - which should be pretty soon.

Thank you for the update, I presume you have had no success overriding the built-in MPEG4 tagging support and replacing it with yours? Is there a DLL that could be removed so yours takes over?

I hadn't tried overriding the built-in MPEG-4 tag support yet, but have done so now. I temporarily unregistered Microsoft's MPEG-4 property handler for M4A files. Unfortunately, that didn't help: even when the tags were read by WMP Tag Plus, the lossless file was still added to Other Media. I'll have to look further into this, to see what exactly goes wrong.

Hi Tim!

First of all, many thanks for your plugins for WMP! These tools are awesome!
But i have a problem now.

On my desktop, i have no problem with WMP Tag Plus. Everything's just fine.

But not on my laptop.

I'm running Win7, WMP12. The seeking works, the length are written, but the progress bar doesnt move when i listen to a FLAC track!
And the time counter is not counting, too. But i can seek. :S
I tried to reinstall the plugin, delete and recover the items of the library, none of them helped.
I use Xiph codec only.

It's ununderstandable, because i have the same system and configuration on my desktop...

Are you sure that the Xiph codec is used for playing FLAC files on the laptop? This sounds a lot like a known issue when the madFLAC codec is used instead. Perform a search on your hard drive for the madflac.ax file. If this file is present, then madFLAC is indeed installed, and uninstalling it should fix the problem.

Hi Tim!

I was totally sure that i completely uninstalled madflac. But i didnt.
You were right! madflac.ax have been registered in my system. I unregistered it, reinstalled Xiph.org codecs, and now everything is just fine!

Thanks.

BTW, when we can expect album art tag support for FLAC in WMP Tag Plus?

Album art support is planned for the next major version of WMP Tag Plus. I hope to release this version before the end of the year, but it could be a bit later too. I'm currently still working on Windows Media Player Plus! 2.0, and this is taking longer than initially planned.

It worked, thanks. Still I lost all album images in the process, but it's only 1500 operations to go, so that's OK to me. Two to three hours' work to know you own 317 hours of music is worth it

Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Tim,

Actually, it is 1233 hours of music (51 days and 9 hours).

But 1500 drag & drop taking a few seconds each is actually more a PITA than I imagined.

The album art images are readily available, and what I'm doing is pretty straightforward to restore it to WMP:
Foreach album in WMP,
a) Go to the album's folder,
b) Drag the hidden "folder.jpg" file & Drop it on the album's cd case thumbnail

Is there anyway to automate this?

Obviously, WMP must be storing this information somewhere...

I'm a developper myself, so if you could hint me as to where the data is stored, I could write myself a little program to do it.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Kind Regards,
Benjamin

OK, this time, I'll answer myself.

WMP being the awesome tool it is, you have to think backwards.
In order to add album art to my albums, I actually add to remove album art!
Say, for instance, I have a folder:
ABBA\The Complete Studio Recordings\Arrival
which contains
Code: [Select]
01 When I Kissed the Teacher.flac
02 Dancing Queen.flac
03 My Love, My Life.flac
04 Dum Dum Diddle.flac
05 Knowing Me, Knowing You.flac
06 Money, Money, Money.flac
07 That's Me.flac
08 Why Did It Have to Be Me.flac
09 Tiger.flac
10 Arrival.flac
11 Fernando [-].flac
12 Happy Hawaii [-].flac
13 La Reina del Baile [-].flac
14 Conociéndome, Conociéndote [-].flac
15 Fernando [Spanish Version][-].flac
(*) AlbumArt_{A3B92F5A-1A65-4A74-9498-B5815DB1E161}_Large.jpg
(*) AlbumArt_{A3B92F5A-1A65-4A74-9498-B5815DB1E161}_Small.jpg
(*) AlbumArtSmall.jpg
Arrival (flac).cue
CD.jpg
desktop.ini
Folder.jpg
Inlay.jpg
Sleeve Back.jpg
Sleeve Front.jpg

If I delete the files preceded by (*), WMP will now show up the folder.jpg image automatically.

Raw awesomeness, is it not?

Apologies if this isn't where this belongs, but I'm not sure if it's a WMP Tag Plus problem or something else... And my search-fu has been weak on this matter.

Running WMP12 x86 on Windows 7 x64. I'm trying to play ALAC files; I have WMPTP v1.2 installed, and this DirectShow filter.

WMP recognizes the tags if the file extension is .mp4 or .m4a. If it's .m4a, I get "Windows Media Player encountered a problem playing this file". If it's .mp4, it tries to play the file but does nothing. Either way, it does see the tags.

I assume the problem is somewhere on the DirectShow filter end of things? Any suggestions for what other filter I should use instead, or how I can debug the one I've got?

Are you sure that these are ALAC files? You can check with the GSpot tool. Where do the files come from?

I'm pretty sure that other people have been using the same DirectShow filter to successfully play ALAC files in WMP 12. Don't the files get added to the Other Media library instead of to Music? If they really are ALAC, then they should get added to Other Media, this is a known problem with WMP 12.

The http://www.dsp-worx.de/ filter which I was partially responsible for is the basis of all the solutions for playing ALAC files in WMP. However due to the way filters work in WMP12 compared to previous versions, things are not as straight forward as they used to be. WMP12 unlike previous versions can natively play AAC files, i.e. .m4a files. It therefore has a media splitter built-in to handle these files. As ALAC files use the same file extension and file format (just a different codec) this means that the built-in splitter overrides the one from http://www.dsp-worx.de/

What you have to do is to install the http://www.dsp-worx.de/ filter but also manage to disable the built-in splitter so it does not get in the way. The easiest way to do this is to install the codec pack from here http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html which includes the http://www.dsp-worx.de/ filter but the Shark pack has an option to disable the built-in .m4a support allowing the ALAC filter to take over playing both AAC and ALAC files successfully.

Plenty of people including myself have successfully got WMP12 to play both AAC and ALAC files this way, however we are all finding that while WMP12 will import AAC files properly in to the Music section of the library, ALAC files even though they play, even though the use the exact same Tag format, are instead put in the 'other' section. This seems to be a deliberate act of sabotage by Microsoft.

Please let us know if you do succeed in getting WMP12 to play ALAC files and to store them in the music section as we would like to manage this as well!

and i am on windows 7 32 bit

and i am adding my vote to the people asking for APE support
thanks in advance

How were these WavPack files created? Would it be possible to upload one of these files through something like Yousendit, and PM me the download link? Thanks.

Hey, i'm new here, i appear to be having trouble with this plugin. I am using this plugin to view tag information with flac files. It installs fine, and works ok, it displays tag information correctly (artist, song, etc.), but it doesn't show my files in the library. After closing windows media player and opening it later i find that the plugin no longer works any more, and it doesn't come back. As well as that, all the files have loaded into the library, but they're all loaded in one big lump when viewed in the all music section, but there is apparently no tag information for those files, and as result also don't feature in either artist, album, or any of the other sections. It can't be a problem with the tags, since they displayed at least once. Could anyone help me out?

P.S. I'm using WMP 12

Thankyou

How can you know that the tag information is displayed correctly, if the files don't get added to the library?

Please clarify "it doesn't come back". Can you still see WMP Tag Plus in the Tools - Plug-ins menu? (press Ctrl+M to bring up the Tools menu)

I suggest that you try re-adding the files to the library. Make sure that WMP Tag Plus is checked in Tools - Plug-ins, select the FLAC files, right-click, Delete - Delete from library only - OK. Then go to Tools - Advanced and select Restore deleted library items.

Hi to all guys,
I've just installed WMP Tag Plus hoping to be finally able to play/use/have FLAC audio files in my library, correctly seen as music files, played, seen, with tag write/read ability. Well, that said, I've installed the suggested codec at http://www.xiph.org/dshow/ and installed it too.
Well, WMP Tag Plus is there in WMP plugins, it has flac enabled and seems all good because I can play flacs and see tags when I open a file.
The matter comes when I try to search for a flac file in my library, it simply isn't there even if the file played is in the main library folder. No track of any flac file is there! How does WMP Tag Plus work, so? Am I missing something?
I tried navigating in the website/forum to find out a solution or explaination but didn't find one, oh, by the way, I have Windows 7 64bit and WMP 12.0.7600.16667 and WMP Tag Plus is in the plugins, active and working.

Thanks, sorry for the noob post

Are you sure that none of the FLAC files are in the library, not even under Unknown Artist?

What's the location of the FLAC files? In WMP, click Organize, and select Manage libraries - Music. Is that location in the list there? If not, add it manually.

Perhaps the FLAC files ended up in the Other Media section of the library? If that's the case, then they need to be re-added. See my previous post for instructions on how to do this.

Strangely the files appeared just after I dragged them (while manually opened and played) to an external device for synchronizing them with it! All Right now, Thanks anyway
